Is calling someone “chinaman” racist?

Why is Chinaman so bad but Chinatown is still OK?

Chinatown is the name of a place. It's not a racial slur. They just happen to both have the word "China" in them.

Offensive. Should not be used.

unless your DH is 100 years old and has been living in seclusion, there is no reason for him to say "chinaman" except to be derogatory and racist.

Read the history books. The US history books, not the Chinese history books. The books that covers the events that lead up to the Chinese Exclusion Act in the USA. "Chinaman" is a derogatory term to call a person who looks like Chinese because folks back then do not know what other way to call a Chinese person. They certainly could not pronounce their names.

Shame on your husband. I am asian and if I heard him using the term infront of me he would get a piece of my mind.

I think the original question has been conclusively answered and we can move on to something else now.
