Is calling someone “chinaman” racist?

Anonymous
My son got made fun of at basketball camp last week. When my DH arrived, he was in tears. As my DH was walking my son to the car, he referred to the kid who was making fun of my son as “that tall chinaman” attempting to make a joke to cheer my son up. I think calling someone a “chinaman” is racist and offensive, no matter whether it was intended to be a joke. He quoted the definition of racism in Webster’s Dictionary and told me I was wrong because it didn’t meet the definition. (I’m not sure why, but for argument’s sake, let’s say it’s because the comment wasn’t based on his belief that his race is superior.). Feel free to weigh in.

Insensitive and intolerant and certainly setting a bad example!

China isn’t a race. But it is distasteful and should not be said.

It’s racially insensitive.

The person who quotes the dictionary automatically loses the argument.

"Also, Dude, chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please."

Basketball camp last week?
A "tall chinaman"?
There is so much that doesn't even make sense here.

BTW, the kid was Korean.

Offensive. Even if if the term itself wasn't offensive (even though it is), your husband's use of the kid's race to make fun of him is incredibly racist.

APS had a half day on Thursday and was off on Friday for parent-teacher conferences, so there were camps running on those days.

Wow, I haven’t heard that term since my dad died a few years ago.

At age 90.

It’s a term from a far more bigoted time.

+1. Antiquated term that sounds like it came from Archie Bunker and not the parent of a school-aged kid in 2018.

Kind of funny but not nice.
