Elementary School-Aged Kids
| I am Asian American. While it’s not hostile-level racism, the term is certainly offensive enough! You win this argument hands down. You don’t want your son going around using that word. I would be fuming mad if I heard my child referred to in this way. Why did your DH even think this was funny? |
|
Does your DH know for a fact that the person was from China? Or was it more likely someone with an ethnic heritage from the Asian continent who is American?
The answers to these questions will help you determine whether the term is bigoted. |
+1 I’m mixed but look more Caucasian, as do 2of my kids. DH is Asian. If I heard a parent or classmate using this term, I would say something and we definitely would not socialize with you anymore. That your husband is defending this just reeks of white priviledge. |
| UGH!! so racist and offensive! Your H is a jerk and a poor example to your child. |
| Complete racist. |
| Racist. With an ignorant dad such as this, your son might not stand a chance. |
| Appalling and your child will repeat it. |
| Your husband was wrong and set a horrible example for your son. It is an ugly term. |
|
Is this a post from the 1950s? Dos your husband watch Andy Rooney in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" on the weekends?
If not, I am at a loss. Signed, White Person who generally considers herself conservative. Have literally never even voted Dem, people. This is how bad this is, OP. Good luck. |
Pp back! Mickey Rooney! |
| Da fuq?! |
| Absolutely racist, in the same way that using any other derogatory term for someone of another race is racist even if you personally don't believe your own race is superior and are trying to be funny or otherwise unoffensive. That's not carte blanche to use loaded racist terms. |
That did make me chuckle, PP. |
That was my thought too..."Chinaman" is a term I'd expect to hear from someone born before 1920. How old is OP's dh? |
| Yes. |
