this was probably close in time to when the paternity test came back conclusive that the husband was not the kid's dad.

What a mess.

Where did you get this?

Was that thread about red herrings here in Off Topic? the whole custody thing could be a red herring here.

I found it too, in the Maryland court search. Just look up the name.

Is it normal to change the kids name? Would that mean the dad had custody?

And a side note, it's so very sad how long it takes for custody and paternity to be decided in the courts. It took such a long time for the dad to be declared the father. I hope it didnt keep him from seeing his son during that time.

what's really sad is thinking about him fighting for custody for 3-4 years... and then dying within a year or two of winning the court battle. Whether or not the mom and her ex were involved in his death, it really is just a tragic situation all around.

How was this a tragedy? It sucks the guy died, but I don’t see a “tragedy” here. A bit of a mystery, maybe.

you don’t think it is a tragedy that a young boy is left without his father? you win for most clever post.

NP Jesus ! Just come out and say you're mainly concerned because it happened where you don't think/expect it to happen .

Well, of course that is one part of the tragedy. This happened in an area where murders rarely occur. It happened to someone who appeared to be a very good guy, and it has left a child without his father. And, in an area where murders that happen to unlikely candidates (wasn't a drug dealer, no nefarious behavior), it isn't really being discussed either online or on the news. Barely a mention.

And for the poster who said that this doesn't meet their "tragedy" standard, I must respectfully disagree with you.

Is it really necessary to gossip about this family? Sounds like a domestic issue. Leave them alone.

The police called it a homicide. That's why people are curious to know what happened.

It does sound as though whatever happened was personal/domestic in nature.

police say no threat to the public so why get so fixated on it?

Again, the police called it a homicide and specifically asked the medical examiner not to release details of how he died.

If it was sexual asphyxiation, it would likely not be classified as murder. Why would they not release the manner of death? Something is definitely fishy. This is not an area where murders are very common.

Homicide and murder are not the same.

It does feel very voyeristic. I'm very sorry for the family's loss, and I hope the police find who did it. He seemed like a nice guy and a loving dad.

Please explain the difference between the two.

Would the police call a suicide a homicide?

Homicide is the killing of one person by another person. Murder is criminal homicide. In other words, the justified and/or legal killing of another person is a homicide, but not murder while murder is a subset of homicide.

So if it was a sex act with someone gone wrong, a homicide. Anyway, domestic issue. Not something for nosey neighbors to worry about.

Really? If your neighbor was killed - whether domestic in nature or not - you would just look the other way? And then call people "nosey neighbors" for asking questions?

A few years ago when I lived in DC, one of our neighbors was murdered in his apartment (it was the building across the street). Not only did the police hold briefings with everyone in his building, but also in ours. It gave us a chance to ask questions, and they reassured us that they were looking for the perp and would make an arrest, which happened a few weeks later. As bad as people make out the DC police, this was something that was very considerate.

If that is what happened the results from the corner would have been released and there wouldn’t have been dead silence from the police.
