Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon Prime - Anyone watching?

Ehhh so I think the lines are too much like Gilmore Girls. Midge’s lines when Susie bailed her out are straight from Lorelais mouth: “I did time. I’m hard now” (or whatever she said.) I think Susie is basically a knock off of Sookie. I think Imogene is like Rory. It’s toeing the line between Mad Men (not nearly as good writing) and GG and something dirtier (I don’t watch dirty shows, so I’m not sure what...?) I’m not a prude, I just think she’s throwing in a lot of stuff for shock value, like the boobs. The lines are delivered super fast, like GG.

And why was she buying brisket at a place that sold pork chops?!

I couldn't even stomach the commercials for the show.

Shows I loved-- Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Parks and Rec, Master of None, and Schitt's Creek (watched both seasons twice!).

Well, I am happy to inform you that there are THREE seasons of Schitt's Creek and it's coming back soon for a 4th. I LOVE that show (as well as the others you've listed, but especially Schitt's Creek). Also love this one.

Thanks for the great news! Schitt's Creek is truly my guilty pleasure. I'm the only one in my family that watches it and I try to cover up my tracks so no one knows I watched it.

I'd like to know this too. Frankly, I thought the portrayal of a Jewish family in this show was stereotypical - not in a bad way, but very much what you'd expect an UMC Jewish family of that era to be like. The competition for the rabbi to come to Yom Kippur dinner, the "best" seats in synagogue, the FIL owning a garment factory, etc. etc. Very stereotypical - but again, not in a negative way.

Schitts Creek is the best show.

I'm in the minority (at least on this thread) - I HATED that show. But I did love the other ones a PP mentioned.

HA - totally agree with everything you said! It's like they said, "Well, GG was such a success, let's follow the same formula but with Jewish people and lots of profanity!" I don't mind profanity or nudity, but it's so out of place in this particular show and this particular character.

A couple more episodes in and I know what it’s like!!!

It’s like when a naive 13 year old gets her first journal and writes stories but then also adds in some swear words to see how they look and also doodles boobs and sex in the margins. And then she learns in 7th creative writing that she needs to have a villain and an actual story line...

It’s very juvenile and clunky, IMO. AND SO MUCH LIKE GILMORE GIRLS HOW DOES NO ONE NOTICE THIS!

Just finished the season. I liked the first two or three episodes, then it got kind of slow, then the last two were funny. I loved the episode with Jane Lynch and the mother is hilarious. Can’t stand Joel or the actor that plays him.

I was not a fan of GG.

OMG I said the SAME THING - when she was buying the brisket for the rabbit at a place that also sells pork. That's not kosher! I assume it was intentional in some way, though?

Yep. The cursing is so obvious and not natural at all. It's as if the creators said, "Let's throw the f-word in as much as possible - that'll make it more edgy than GG!"

I agree about Joel - definitely my least favorite character. There's just nothing appealing about him whatsoever.

Anonymous wrote:It's wonderful. Finishing the last episode right now. I think her age/appearance is perfectly fitting for the time period - it's clear to me.

The pilot was the best episode by far. Just the right amount of kitsch. Love love love it.
I think the pilot is so appealing because she appears to have every aspect of life under control. You know it’s a fantasy but you so wish you could be like that. And of course a main lesson is that things fall apart despite all her efforts.

I don’t get why she is so mad. Joel came back and said he wanted to try again, she said no. That was her choice. Why does she go off on that rant at his new place?!

Are you kidding? He was having an affair. He cheated on her, multiple times. Why would she want him back?

And she was furious to see that he was living in a really nice place (like they had). So pretty much, he just traded her in for a newer model. You wouldn't be mad?
