I love seeing my people represented in this show.
I'm from the UWS, and we're Jewish, and so much of the dialogue sounds exactly like me and my family. The relationships and banter are spot on (except that none of our husbands has left us...yet). It's really comforting to see an accurate (non-stereotyped) portrayal of Jewish life and families. That said, I've only seen the first two episodes. We'll see if the whole season holds up. |
| Loved it (Jewish woman here) and lots of it felt very familiar and accurate to me, but I thought some of the acting and the script in the last few episodes was a bit hammy, especially Midge's parents. But it was overall very enjoyable and different to other shows |

I liked the first episode but the show went downhill from there for me. I love Gilmore Girls but this show feels like a caricature. I do not like the main character and for tired of the Broadway feel — like the life or death brigade sections of Gilmore girls.
ASP clearly has some favorite motifs. Really wealthy families. Mother/daughter dynamic. Odd characters like Miss Patty in GG and the fortune teller in this show. The show is beautiful visually. Love the costumes and architecture. |
| It’s bubble gum not much there but visually appealing and fun. I liked it. I’m neither Jewish nor upper class, and I never watched Gilmore Girls. |
| The first few episodes were a bit slow for me but then I got into it. I actually really enjoyed it. LOVED the clothing, hair, and makeup too. |
Agree completely with your review! The costumes are to die for - Midge looks absolutely gorgeous in those dresses and coats. Best fashion era, IMO. And the big, beautiful apartments - love. But it is too much of that slapstick-type banter that GG was famous for. It gets old reeeeeal fast. I was mostly impressed with Rachel Brosnahan, having only seen her in House of Cards before. Her character on that show was *completely* different - very meek and cowed by men. I truly couldn't believe it was the same actress playing Midge. Fabulous job. I think she's the best thing about the show. The parents overdo it. |
| Loved it, think Midge is hilarious. (But then I am a Gilmore Girls fan, and this is vintage Amy Sherman-Palladino, just dirtier). |
| I'm 4 episodes in. I get a little annoyed with the "slapstick banter" too. But I like the lead. And Joel is a really interesting character. |

I like everything but the standup comedy part. My favorite character is the mother.
She says to the estranged husband, “Your wife is...(dramatic pause) WORKING.” LOL. |

Hate it. I tried two episodes. I also tried GG-- for like 5 episodes and hated them too. I love comedy, and love to laugh and I very rarely laughed. it's odd because so many of my friends love GG and I'm sure they will love this too. I'm the odd girl out.
Shows I loved-- Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Parks and Rec, Master of None, and Schitt's Creek (watched both seasons twice!). |
My husband and I are watching it together. He loves it even more than I do, and I love it. He was also a big fan of Gilmore Girls so YMMV. She is a great character. Man would she be exhausting in real life! |
Well, I am happy to inform you that there are THREE seasons of Schitt's Creek and it's coming back soon for a 4th. I LOVE that show (as well as the others you've listed, but especially Schitt's Creek). Also love this one. |
| Haven't watched it yet, but I will definitely be watching it with my daughter. We loved GG. Honest question to the PPs who appreciated and accurate portrayal of a Jewish family. Have you seen portrayals that were too stereotypical to you or offensive? |
Schitts Creek is the best show. |
