We talk about politics and social justice a lot. They ask a lot of questions, and we don't shy away from conversation. Sometimes we debate.

The comment about converting him to Team Hillary was nothing more than a flip comment. You do realize that (sadly) my 8 year old can't vote in the primary, right? And that's disappointing given that he's probably more politically astute than many adults.

PS - Child actors (and that's what they are) are sadly exploited every day. That's on their parents and the industry. Are you similarly concerned about all the kids on tv shows on disney and nickelodeon? What about the kids in the Bad News Bears who used potty mouth language? I don't feel badly for those kids--they'll probably use this as a launching pad into something else. Both are super cute and clearly have stage presence...as most child actors do.

That's really a shame. I am a strong conservative and I do not feel I failed because my son is supporting Sanders. I feel that he has done his research and supports him for reasons that make sense to him. I also know that as he grows up, that might change. Then again, it might not. I still won't feel like a failure - I will feel like a parent who has raised her kids to think for themselves.

I'm not sure you see your own bias. I'm not surprised by that. Liberals like yourself are some of the most extreme thinkers out there, while blaming conservatives like myself for being narrow-minded.

Making excuses for the behavior of Hollywood regarding the exploitation of kids? I take it you support Roman Polanski as well?

These two sets of comments are an excellent illustration of the difference between Liberal (current US left, which believes that anyone who opposes them is some combination of mean, stupid, and evil) and liberal (in the traditional sense).

That's a pretty tired argument. Why do republicans always go there? They spew anti-woman, anti-gay, and racist views publicly as their political platform and then they have the audacity to claim that liberals attack them in some sort of elitist way as being mean, stupid and evil for disagreeing with their anti-woman, anti-gay and racist platform??? Context matters. I'm not debating you about the weather, sports, or the latest fashion trend. When the leading republican presidential candidates publicly make racist comments and liberals call them out on it, there's no rational justification for that. Period.

If you want to call me an elitist liberal for my staunch support of equality, then go for it. Then ask yourself why you and your party insist upon being anti-woman, anti-gay and racist. If you truly believe you and your party aren't those awful things, then I think you need to do a little research to better understand your party's platform. My 8 year old can explain it to you if you like. He uses a great analogy of children playing in a sandbox.

Yes, and I'm sure that you think that wetback merely describes the fact that when swimming in a river, one gets wet. Yet there it is, an ethnic slur.

When you call a kid an anchor baby, you are saying that his purpose is to create a legal status which makes it hard to deport his family. You may even be implying that he was conceived for the purpose of doing that.

In case you have any doubt, you will not hear people voluntarily calling themselves or their children anchor babies. That would be your first clue.

We do not need people breaking our laws, and then telling us to fuck off when we call them on it. It is obvious that their offspring are learning the same thing-anchor baby or not. And yes, they are nothing more than anchor babies.....not just the hispanic ones, but all of them.

OMG. Your racist rant and ridiculous attempt at justifying your hateful beliefs are precisely why I would feel like a failure if my kid grew up to be a republican. Thanks for your post--I can't wait to show it to my kids as it presents a great teachable moment.

Are you from the DC metro area? If so, what's your highest level of education? Just curious.

Just wondering if your third grader attends a school that is over 50% minority-in particular Hispanics. Move to Langley Park and get back to me. By the way-Ivy Educated with a PhD.

Oh, so it's okay to be a racist if you are an ivy educated white person living in Langley Park. Who knew?

Question: how does an ivy educated white person end up in Langley Park? Just curious what life choices prompted that. And wondering if your racism is a product of misplaced anger/disappointment?

For the record, I happen to like LP. Great restaurants.

My 8 year old understands why MoCo and PG have a thriving Latino population due to the politics and violence in Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras over the last two decades. Do you?

If you lived in Langley Park I doubt you would say the population is "thriving". I'm surprised you set foot over there to get a taco. I live in Mclean-we are likely neighbors....and I am not white (how "racist" of you to assume that). You also make it seem like no one with an Ivy degree should live in LP-why? What is wrong with illegals and their anchor babies?

Why so much anger if you are living it up in McLean? And what has prompted your racist views and obsession with anchor babies?

As I said before, I like LP. And no, we are most certainly not neighbors...I'd never live in such an elitist, conservative area. I know two families who moved out of there in order to save their children from being raised in that bubble. It's not a healthy environment.

No, I dont think wet back is appropriate. You would be wrong.

Of course it's wrong! And once you explore why it is wrong, you will understand why anchor baby is wrong.

BTW the American Heritage Dictionary definition of Anchor Baby:

n. Offensive Used as a disparaging term for a child born to a noncitizen mother in a country that grants automatic citizenship to children born on its soil, especially when the child's birthplace is thought to have been chosen in order to improve the mother's or other relatives' chances of securing eventual citizenship.

Yes, that definition was revised after first defining it as not pejorative. PC won the day. Congratulations.

+1 I was about to ask the same thing. It is simply short hand for the reality of the situation. There is actually no value judgement inherent in the term. I use the term to describe our current state of affairs and I actually support a liberal immigration policy.

If you are so anti-PC, then you should love the deport racism campaign.

Sounds like they don't need esol services, time to slash that from the budget

A) I can't think of anyone who uses it as a 'slur' --it would be an incredibly mild one at that. It is used to describe a mechanism by which citizenship is obtained. Much like "birth tourism". I don't even think of it as anchoring the family -- as it does not confer rights from baby to parent without a lengthy process. It certainly anchors the baby as an American to this country - and yes, America is a 'safe harbor' for many. Tongue in cheekly -- I can think of a way to make the term go away, which would be to make that citizenship pathway go away. What countries besides the United States bestow citizenship this way?

yes, I'll keep 'anchor baby' and you keep children saying "F U'. Deal? Enjoy your linguistically responsible high horse.

Can you please cite some of the leading candidates--Marco Rubio, Ben Carson, Donald Trump, Ben Carson--spewing racist comments publicly? Thanks.

Jeb Bush? I mean you make it sound like they're doing it left and right. The leading Republican candidates spewing racist comments I mean.
