Nah... Bernie is naive enough to believe we can have a "democratic" socialism. You see, everything he knows about socialism, he learned from books. He never experienced it IRL. He is idealistic, and his idealism is attractive to young people. But young people get older and learn that this world is far from ideal.

I think it's interesting that after the civil rights work he was involved in he scooted up to Lilly white Vermont.

Are you obliged to move to the south in order to care about blacks? Are you required to be poor in order to care about the poor?

The guy was born and raised in Brooklyn. He and his brother dreamed about buying a piece of land in Vermont since they were little kids. So they did. It's that simple. Should they have moved to the deep south? Why, the farthest south he ever lived was Chicago. He had no connection there.
