Engaged to a german man but we ended it before walking down the aisle. He was uncircumcised, well-educated, sporty (enjoyed hiking and skiing), spoke multiple languages (German, French, Spanish, Russian, English). He was punctual and inflexible. Not very creative but very mathematically inclined. His parents were unintentionally racist. I'm not white and they said a few hmmmm things to me but always acted really kind and sweet too. They were a little provincial and had not travelled much outside of Germany.

Stop shaving your armpits. German men expect hairy pits on women. See also : Nena99luftballons

He may want you to wear a biergarten boob-smooshing ensemble and wear your hair in two braids.

Ha I'm German and love my lists and to be organized! However I would run from a guy like that. Nothing OP describes sounds romantic to me, just controlling and overly rigid.

This made it to page 4 without a Weiner Schnitzel comment?

On the other hand, it's not as automatic that you would have kids.

What??? Most of the Germans I know are feminists. Extreme liberal, intellectual feminists. Awesome people. The others are like Americans are about working mothers. No advice. I am married to a German. They are just like us.

Yeah, original quoted poster, you are thinking perhaps about your parents generation, but I lived in Germany for many years and have many friends in relationships and with families there and nothing you are saying is true. Mothers stay home after their children are born because they are given one year paid leave. Everyone I know with kids has gone back to work - this was much more common in Germany long before in America.

My in laws all still live in Germany. Very nive people but on the whole, not very deomonstrative or affectionate. Very tight circle in the family which is nice though. Men are stoic and not very talkative about feelings (worse than american men).

When my german grandmother was recovering from hip surgery about 10 years ago me and my dh (who is jewish) and the kids would congregate in her bedroom to help her in her convalescence. While my DH was seated in the chair next to her bed and in full hearing of her grandchildren she said: :"vell, I never thought I vould have a jew in my bedroom". So we'll always have that to remember her by.

But they're very considerate about it and very careful about prep materials and clean up.
