I think it's more tactical. Historicslly they were not kind to Jews. It's just that they hate Muslims more.

As far as I know, Cruz is not an evangelical and the second coming and its inter-relationship with Israel and the rebuilding of the temple is something the evangelicals believe.

I think Cruz like many others of his ilk are opportunists. They are courting the evangelical vote and in the process also getting the support of other Republicans for whom support of Israel is paramount although unrelated to religious convictions.

Cruz is a big time Southern Baptist (who are evangelical), and his father is a pastor.

Even his detractors would never call him dumb.

He has derailed all sorts of compromise and masterminded the last shutdown. For what end? Apparently, pure self-aggrandizement.

Agreed. But did it hurt him with those who will be key to deciding the next Republican presidential nominee?

Not according to this poll after the fracas:

Good for Cruz. This is what we conservatives love about him. Don't think he has a chance to be president, but it's refreshing to have a guy who doesn't pander to every group he talks to. When he saw the anti-Semitism emanating from some of the Arab "Christians" he was speaking to, he told them the truth. And the truth is that it is Muslims who are trying to kill Christians in the Middle East, not Jews. The Christians and Jews should be allies there - those in the audience that disagreed did so out of sheer bigotry, and 90% of Republicans will love that Cruz called them out on it.

If Obama did this you would call him divisive. You would say a President (i.e. what Cruz is trying to become) needs to represent all people, even those who disagree with him.

Conservatives aren't principled, just self-interested.

Oh PUH-lease! Do you honestly believe that Israel would spare 1 life to save an arab christian in Syria or Iraq right now? Please refresh my memory - how many israelis have lost lives fighting to help other countries? I cannot recall.

+1. Sadly, there are a LOT of people who do not understand this.

They don't really care to question the status quo about Palestine and Israel.

Like a lot of GOP candidates did with the Tea Party?

Sheer bigotry? You, Cruz and other like him are focusing just on the religous aspect of it while ignoring the ethnic and cultural aspects. But they are bigots? So the people he was speaking to should just ignore what is happening in Gaza? If they are expressing anti-Semitism, that is why! They view that whole situation as an attack on Arabs - not just Muslims.

I swear - so many people (including Cruz) just do not understand the issues beyond the soundbytes.

What is it about? Land? Water?

Nationalism. Mostly these are nationalist movements, and to the extent that they cloak it in religion is because it is easy to motivate people to do extreme things if they believe God is on their side.
Agree. But things like water are very important as well, since Israel takes the vast majority of the water from the Jordan River.
