Immersion Programs

Several of the DCPS dual language school follow the 50/50 model beginning in K. The dual language charter do as well-except Bethune who stops in beginning in 3rd grade.

Probably not as the dual language programs -in DC- have at least 2 teachers in the classroom-one for the target language and one for English.

^^ So does Bethune have the money to implement the two teacher model? Also, won't there still be a lot of overlap with the addition of extra Spanish instructors?

Not sure how many they would need to add since there are already doing daily instruction for grades 3-8. I'll ask Dr. M the next time I see her.

Instead of pathetically pulling the race card and making Bethune look pathetic, why don't you tell the truth. It's dishonest to stand behind an out of touch position (the need to concentrate on English) and get pissed when you're called out. If the school needs to concentrate on English for upper grades, why no plans to expand for lower grades? The answer is obvious- current English only teachers would be displaced. Why is this so hard for you?

Because, to put it bluntly, the difference between the SES of the parents in PS3 and PK4 vs. the older grades is huge.

But pretending like there's a need to focus on English for upper grades and remaining silent about lower grades is a disservice to students and parents with interest in Bethune.

It is my understanding that Bethune is a charter. Charter schools are not beholden to DCPS schools of retaining teachers, and in fact, charters have mo hesitation in replacing teachers to suit their needs. I am not the PP you have been nasty with, but your accusations without evidence does seem odd, if not racist. BTE, it is easy to say you are white, black, Asian, Muslim, Jewish, etc over the Internet. Who is there to dispute the claim.

In all immersion schools there are English only and Spanish only teachers so why would they need to displaced when they are still needed?

I think you're onto something! Does racist poster think Bethune is a neighborhood school?

Good grief! You Bethune parents are worse than Sela parents! Sad! In the end the kids are being cheated. My child is in dual language, which goes way beyond third grade and is already fluent. Your kids will start a class in third grade and lose fluency. You guys are losing here. Stop defending the school and making bullshit up. Thank goodness most people don't care about Bethune and wouldn't risk their child's education by sending them there.

^^ so they could give a shit about this thread

Who would send their child to Bethune? Their scores are awful.

NP here. Back to Yu Ying... does anyone know if they are expecting to start PS3 in the 2014-15 school year? Thanks!

NP here. I don't know who at Bethune boiled your bunny or peed in your cornflakes, but it's so obvious that you have a specific beef with Bethune and are trying to malign them just to speak ill of them. If there is any validity to your point at all, it is lost and impossible to find because it's buried beneath your weird, raging vendetta against Bethune.

Do yourself (and everyone else!) a favor and go for a walk, or join a committee at your "top charter" and Handel this bizarre anger into something positive. Because right now you just sound like "Vendetta Mom/Dad".

^^ I think we're all angry that Bethune boosters won't shut down naysayers by simply providing facts. Calling commenters racist because they believe the policy of getting rid of immersion by third grade really does nothing to help the kids. It makes Bethune look and sound like the mediocre (at best) charter it is. But, we all know its mediocre and a responsible parent wouldn't send their kid there. Guess I'm a racist too! Oh well! Word of caution to everyone: do not criticize anything with the appearance of being majority African American. Those establishments are absolutely perfect. You're just a racist... Tee hee!!!

I think they are "considering" it (if the letter to the YY parents is correct).
