Immersion Programs

At what point is "too late" to enter the program? I know at Bethune they don't accept new students after 3rd grade.

Bethune does accept children after the 3rd grade.

The problem is getting in, in the first place. It's all by lottery, they all give preferences to siblings and have 100s on their waitlists.

Yu Ying does not accept new students after 2nd although there has been rumors that they may change this to 1st. There is also a possibility that they'll add 100% Mandarin preK3 soon.

Bethune has spaces available in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. Bethune is currently trying to fill several spota that they have available in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade. But, Bethune switches to spanish classes beginning in 3rd grade-they no longer follow the 50/50 imeersion model for 3rd and above.

Odd, the principal told me at the tour they didn't accept children after the 3rd grade because of the language. Good to know! I'll check again.

I saw their school news letter that they were considering this. Interesting to 100% mandarin for PS3 and PK4

The pricipal mentioned that using their model many kids no longer retain the Spanish language.

Personally know of a kid (with not exposure to the language) that enrolled in the school.

This woulnd't make sense anyway. They are only offering a spanish class beginning in 3rd grande and not immersion.

This is posted on Bethunes website:

"What grade levels are offered at MMBDA?
MMBDA has openings in Preschool 3 through Grade 6."

Which say that they accept kids up to grade 6. FYI-they have spaces in 2nd-5th.

I wonder why they get rid of the immersion (vs. keeping it through the years). Good to know.

They have always followed this model since 2003, when they first began in Ward 7.

It's b/c of the DC CAS. They cannot expand the Mandarin in the latter grades so the only way to get more Mandarin is to front load it. Also, many kids have younger sibs - will make it easier to have the preschool kid at the same school as the older sib.

They'd have to get rid of some of their black teachers and replace them with Spanish-speakers if they expand the program. This won't likely go over too well.

...and PS3 is guaranteed funds for a school.
