Well, as a "barely educated" American ( BS degree from public university) here is what I have picked up about Chechnya over the years just from reading the newspaper:

1) It borders the former USSR Republics of Khazakhistan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgistan ( excuse my ignorant American spelling)
2) Historically muslim since the time of Timerlain, the Czar used these people as horseman in his infantry d/t their historic and legendary rep for being fierce and determined fighters ( note the name of the older brother)

3) During the break up of USSR, Checnyans , who always resented Soviet hegemony, fought for independance and did this fighting the old fashioned way, lacking a civilian army ( terrorism)

4) This coincided with Bosnian war in which Muslims were being attached by Serbs ( Orthodox Christians historically allied w/ Russia since 13th century)

5) this also dove tailed the SSI/ Saudi/ CIA backed Mujahaddin fighting in Afghanistan against the Soviets

( all of this formed a training camp tr-feca) and funnel for young unemployed muslim youth from Saudi, Yemen, and UK and other places to come to Checnya to train to fight Jihad

6) flash forward a decade or so and naiive little USA is pretty clueless as to who is a former collaborator Checnyan ( who worked for Soviets as the Boston family seems to have done , given their alliance to the current Chenyan leader who is a Russian puppet) and b) who is a bonafide Chechnyan fighter aka " terrorist" Or given the schizoid nature of Soviet society over the last 80 years, can not one be both ?

My guess is we are still at the Kindergarten level in divining this sort of "intelligence" and we naiively grant "refugee status" to the WRONG people who pull the wool over our eyes ALL THE TIME, just like this family seems to have done.

Naive little USA? Hahahahahahaha!

Oh my god, that has to me the funniest thing I've read on DCUM ever.

Yes, we are compared to the Israeli and UK intelligence services, relatively naiive, or stupid, pick your adjective.

These brothers would have never been allowed to get on an El Al flight. no way in hell. We, on the other hand, naturalized them.

That is embarrassing.

Jeff, he himself ref's the comments he got from his fellow mosque attendants on his twitter feed. You need to just google:

Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev and read his twiiter feed ( comments of his brother are posted there as well) and the translated portions of his Russian "facebook account". I have a friend who is fluent in Russian and what he has posted is pretty blatant.

I myself am against type casting people based on facial hair, but do read what he has written, look at his recent travel outside the country, and his own comments in the feature interview he gave as a golden gloves boxer.

I have been reading about him all day and my wife is fluent in Russian. I'm not denying that he is Muslim. I am just not willing to jump to the conclusion that he was motivated by Islam. There are too many things that make that unlikely. I think it is far more likely that he suffered brain damage from boxing. NPR interviewed a guy with whom he sparred who said Tsarnaev never warn head gear. He's probably been hit in the head enough times to have been hearing voices for years.

What information to you have that they are Muslim extremists?

http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2013/04/boston-bombing-suspect-posted-video-al-qaeda-prophecy-youtube

Not "proof" just evidence of an emerging profile of the bombers (draw your own conclusions):

-Apparently someone managed to save a few pics and quotes from the older (dead) bomber's social media pages.

One alleged quote under a pic of him and his girlfriend at the boxing gym: " Tamerlan says his girlfriend is half Portuguese, half Italian girlfriend and converted to Islam: "She's beautiful, man!"

Another alleged post shows him without his shirt over the quote along the lines of "Tamerlan says he doesn't usually take his shirt off so girls don't get bad ideas: "I'm very religious." "

Being very religious is a good thing.

They posted that they had no friends. They could easily be misfit youth who happened to be Muslim.

Wrong. You mis-quoted what the suspect actually stated (according to multiple sources) What he actually typed was: "
“I don’t have a single American friend,” Tamerlan says in one of the photo captions. “I don’t understand them.”

The possibility of mere "misfit youth" is not supported by the facts. He never said he did not have friends. He only stated that he did not have any AMERICAN friends. Then he clarified "I do not understand them [Americans]." Those are not the statements of a mere misfit. They are the statements of someone who apparently hates America.

I wonder if the bomber's professed faith bears any connection in this case? What are the chances? Mere coincidence?

No one in the high school describes them as someone who hates America. He said he had no friends here, and you turn it into a statement about hate.

Actually what he said was , " I've been here 5 years and i don't have a single American friend....I don't understand them....people are weak and have no values" " America is good 'cause you can make money"

And THAT is who we gave cituzenship to. That's a disgrace, people.

Is this a joke? There are lots of boxing photos of him wearing head gear. And that is a ridiculous tangent anyway.

Actually, maybe the boxing IS to blame? You never know for sure. The investigation is just starting and won't be done for months. How do we even know the brothers had anything to do with it at all? After all, their father emphatically said they were framed.

Would it kill you to learn to quote properly? Try using the "Preview" button next time. It's hard to read your posts otherwise.

The pictures of him wearing head gear are probably from tournaments where it is required. Why would his sparing partner -- who, btw, basically said the guy was a sissy -- lie about whether he wore head gear or not? Also, when he was abroad he may have been boxing in situations in which head gear wasn't normally worn.

You criticized the PP for not learning to quote properly but you spelled sparring wrong...

He could say same about spellcheck?

Let's try not to judge others in this regard please. We are all better than that.

Sadly, "sparing" is actually a word. So spell check, which I did, is of no help.

I see this as grasping at straws, especially in light of all that has been uncovered so far. I can see taking it slow but blaming it on a boxing head injury is so out of left field in terms of speculation I honestly don't know what to DO with it.

If Glen Beck suggested it -- and you could pull yourself away from buying gold long enough -- you would believe it.

I can see that. Still, both were honest errors. Again, we are better than this.

That's Glenn, and not really. I can see Glenn suggesting it in jest though.

I do buy gold, and have money in the market and real estate as well. Best not to put all our eggs in one basket.

Where are you getting this "people are weak and have no values". I think you are starting to shape his quotes to fit your purpose.

Exactly. And the interviews the family are giving are shameful. '

Face it, your son was ID'd by a man who is know a double BTK amputtee, who made eye contact with him and saw him put his back pack down, right next to the 8 year old Martin boy who was killed. There is a photo of it.

Why the denial, Jeff ? They did it. I don't give a damn WHAT motivated them, but as far as I'm concerned they have just condemned their whole story.
