Yes, this happens on my block, too. There's lots of little stuff that stays in the bottom of the can forever. A bag of poop will just get smashed down and leak. |
| Terrible. Please do not do this. The fact that only some people are ok with this should tell you that you should nOT do this. |
+1 We live in NWDC and the cans do not get dumped, they just take out the large trash bags. Our house is the first/last house at the end of an alley lined with cans so everyone seems to pick our can for their doodie dump. Hate it, our cans reek and we get flies because the poop stays for weeks and weeks. Please don't do it. In fact, you are inspiring me to put a polite note on our can. Even if it deters one thoughtful dog walker, it would be an improvement. |
Not true. Plenty of people live on Wisconsin and Connecticut and there are many many public trash cans. |
| Dog owner here. Please don't do this! It stinks, and attracts flies which might lay eggs in the bag and can. Especially in the hot months. Some people are more fastidious about their trash cans and filling those with unwanted poop is beyond rude! My DH will carry a bag for a few blocks to find a public can, which is sort of gross but it is our dog and up to us to ditch poop properly. |
Good question. Curious to hear some response to this. In my neighborhood, lots of people will pick up assorted trash left on the sidewalk (usually just paper or plastic chip bags the wind blew away, but sometimes dog poop), and throw it in the nearest trashcan. I do it too. Seems wrong criticize us do-gooders. Also, what about neighborhoods where the entire can gets dumped? In my neighborhood, the trash truck flips out the entire can. I regularly see people tossing dog poop bags in any nearby can left out on trash day. It's never seemed like a problem to me, and no one in our neighborhood has complained about that on our local listserv. What does get complained about are people who fail to bag the poop, or who leave the bag sitting in the grass. FWIW, I find other people's dog poop bags in my trash cans fairly regularly, and it's never bothered me. I guess if the trash truck refused to take those baggies, I'd be annoyed, but I'd probably be agitating to get the trash trucks to do a better job! I think many people here are way too territorial about their trash cans. |
| 12:14 again. I especially don't understand the outrage since your trashcan is only out on the street for a pretty brief period, right? Where I live, people drag their cans out to the curb the night before trash-day, or maybe early that morning. And then most people drag the empty cans back up to the house before leaving for work, or maybe that afternoon if you leave for work early before the trash truck comes. So the cans are only out on the sidewalk for about 12 hours, once per week. If there's that much dog poop and flies and eggs and whatnot, where on earth do you live?!? Next to a kennel? |
| Haven't read thru this thread, but, no, don't throw your dog poo in my trash can. Even if it's encased in plastic bag, the smell lingers and stinks up my can. No, no thanks. |
So you'd be agitating for everyone but YOU to put more effort into cleaning up after other people's dogs. |
| no way |
I don't even understand your comment. I'd be agitating for my local trash trucks (not "everyone") to fully empty my trashcans, and not leave little stuff in them. What's the harm in that? My point is that if the trash truck is refusing to take anything out of your trashcan except for the large bags, you've got a bigger and different problem than just an occasional baggie of dog poop that someone might add to your pile. |
| No. It's not OK. Ew! |
Our trashcans are permanently out in the back alley, as are those of our neighbors. So they are there 24/7, seemingly just for the convenience of lazy dog poop dumpers. |
+1 Burbs dweller here as well. If I saw you putting anything in my trash can, you will know to never do it again. |
| It is a problem in my neighborhood. The trash guys will only take bagged trash, so even on trash day your little bag gets left behind. I own two dogs and take them for long walks, so I feel your pain about having to carry the bag for two miles because the dog did her business 1/3 of a mile into the walk. |
