Does your principla do this (or other things you know)?

YY parent. I love the above post. It is very appropriate. I wish every DCPCS thread did not turn into a WYY feast, but it seems almost inevitable.

Also, I agree with the poster who said that if you begin to question YY you are shouted down by the other parents and labled a trouble maker. You learn to remain very quiet and keep your thoughts to yourself at the PTA meetings. But somehow I think that is not uncommon in the charter world. I say, take YY for what it is. It is a new school, full of tiger moms and dads, dealing with some inexperienced teachers, some great teachers, some inept administrator(s), some experienced and/or dedicated administrator(s), and an enormous amount of teachers, parents, administrators and supporters who want the extreme best for the school and its charges.
Amen! Both posters are right -- YY parents get shot down if they speak up/post different views on anything. Case in point: One infamous and unfortunate incident in the winter turned real ugly when one parent made an innocent and careless comment on the listserve. Then several parents openly "attacked" the person verbally. Also the administration jumped on the "attacking" wagon. The parent didn't deserve any of that. It was so very sad for the YY community to witness what took place. It felt like pulic lynching. If that can happen to her, it can happen to any parent. As a matter of fact, other parents experience similiar treatment from administration (although not in an opern forum).

Unless it happens to you, YOU wouldn't know what it is like to being "attacked" by both administration and other parents. Try speaking up next time, see what happens. Maybe this should also answer the question from 8/5/11 13:33: "Re: 10:15 - why would parents be so afraid? What kind of retaliation are they afraid of?"

New YY parent of an entering PKer. The more I read this forum, the more sorry I get we did not go private.

FWIW, YY's google group is having a very boring discussion about soccer leagues for 4, 5, 6 yr olds and that's about it. DCUM is MUCH more interesting and candid.

at 16:35, isn't it telling to note that not even one single parent posted anything about the DC CAS scores, which seem to be such an important topic for so many parents and schools?! YY's E.D. came out with a self-contratulatory note boosting the scores which BTW are quite embarrasing. "We're thrilled with... the results" so she wrote.

@16:35 I don't have a horse in the YY race but ...

1. I would ignore the YY haters and 2. I would ignore the no more than three YY crazies on DCUM who are taking over every string.

I'm sture the general YY community is very nice.

except you have no idea who is talking, whether they are actually YY parent(s), or only one or two YY parents. my kids are at the school and it has been great. Signed an anonymous YY parent (if you believe me)

Good for you, PP. The principal along with many staff and administrator(s) all have kids at YY. I'm sure they'll tell you it's great. Other parents might tell you it's great. It can be great if you don't have a different view from the administration and don't speak up for your kid or things you believe it.

Signed,

A YY parent

How do we know if 17:00 is not the principal or any staff/teachers herself?

Completely surprising Not even a mention.

That parent's "innocent and careless" comment blatantly insulted the school's teachers. Of course everyone rushed to their defense. She should not have received the personal responses she described (most of these were apparently not posted to the listserv) but anyone who read her email could only be appalled.

e-mail can be a very unforgiving forum for communication. people say the first thing they think, and then it explodes. . .. into anonymous forums where grudges are still held.

Teachers and administrators must wake up every morning looking so forward to the backseat driving/100X magnification scrutiny from overzealous parents who regard all things school as a spectator sport, and love to stir the coals.

Maybe because they are "all thrilled" anyone who might not be as thrilled as they are will be labled as a troublemaker. Parents, as a poster mentioned, probably just decided to be quiet.

Looks like YY is very Chinese in some ways. Too bad it isn't in educating their students (especially in math).

These comments are very cruel about YY. As a parent, I don't understand A)the meaness from people who don't have kids there and B) the negativity from parents that do have kids there that doesn't recognize or acknowledge all the work done by the school.

It is one thing to make constructive suggestions to a school--it is another to bash the parents and school and I truly don't understand why the hell you would stick it out at a school that you don't like and/or think is doing a poor job educating your kid.

The comments are cruel. The Yu Ying admin is often cruel as well. This is a school with promise. Smug leadership is impeding academic progress.
