Her initials are LD and was friendly and well liked by parents.

I have to agree with the rampant nepotism at charter schools. What I found to be the novel excuse was that many of the relatives were volunteers or grant receivers. Therefore, the wording was that they weren't actually supervising relatives, they were over-seeing grantees.

Hogwash I say, if it walks like your Aunt Agatha, then it is your Aunt Agatha.

I love the receptionist now at Yu Ying. I had no idea she was her mother, but she (and all of the front office) are great. I hope the move to temporary offices and then to another building doesn't burn them all out.

And for crying out loud people- she is a receptionist. She is not in charge of money, kids, information or anything else that would cry foul. I thought LD was great, but I have a hunch that as the school changed then salaries did, too. Maybe she wasn't able to continue. I don't know. I do imagine that people aren't exactly clambering for those types of wages.

Charters do seem to get away with a lot of things that don't pass the smell test.

Yes she is a receptionist. The point is that another receptionist lost her job to be replaced by the mother. BTW, your hunch was way off about how and why she was gone.

I'm not shocked any more about what's happening at Yu Ying. If this happened at my daughter's school, our PTA probably would have demanded a written form of explanation and our principal would have to deal with the board -- but our board wouldn't have allowed this to happen in the first place.

Me either - I have been at YY since it started and have learned that they receive very little heat about such decisions and if you try to speak up you are shot down pretty quickly.

Come on PP, that is not a blanket accurate statement. That is what has happened with YOU not with all parents.

I don't have anything against YY, but why does almost every discussion string here end up all about YY?

Isn't this on par with the whole "Tiger Mother" approach? Hey, the principal didn't feel like giving her mother an allowance anymore so she cooked up a scheme to have the school do it for her! HA!

Pass the peas!

Haven't you heard? Jeff Steele is changing this to "Yu Ying Urban Boosters and Bashers".

Aren't we all only speaking from our own experiences? Would you like for me to speak about someone else's experience?

Haven't they heard of Google Groups or do they just prefer the anonymity? Start another string please.

YY parent. I love the above post. It is very appropriate. I wish every DCPCS thread did not turn into a WYY feast, but it seems almost inevitable.

Also, I agree with the poster who said that if you begin to question YY you are shouted down by the other parents and labled a trouble maker. You learn to remain very quiet and keep your thoughts to yourself at the PTA meetings. But somehow I think that is not uncommon in the charter world. I say, take YY for what it is. It is a new school, full of tiger moms and dads, dealing with some inexperienced teachers, some great teachers, some inept administrator(s), some experienced and/or dedicated administrator(s), and an enormous amount of teachers, parents, administrators and supporters who want the extreme best for the school and its charges.

BTW, I dont think I am a tiger mom, maybe a tiger cub in making, but I think most moms on DCUM are tiger cubs in the making, tiger cubs or full grown tigers when it comes to their children.

Well, maybe not the moms who allow their children to crumble all the Starbucks' cookies without giving a stern look of disapproval or a straight out "NO".

Not in DC, but one of the teachers at our school lives in the principal's basement.
