Omg, why do we owe them a living? Dentists in the 19th century were on about the same level as snake oil salesmen. I'm not talking about Dental surgeons here, just garden variety dentists. I quit one on New Mexico Ave because he was clearly a junkie and stoned out of his mind most of the time during my visits. The hygenicist (sp) does most of the heavy lifting anyway. The guy seemed like a butt pincher--I would never allow myself to be unconscious with him--he just creeped me out.

You do not owe them a living and nothing I said implied that. I very clearly said that if you do not like the prices charged for the service by one dentist/vet, please find another one.

I don't have any problem with my vet or my dentist because I did my research before choosing them. There are plenty of reviews online- be proactive instead of being a whiner.

Gee, I did my research and nothing I read prepared me for him to be stoned and be a potential butt pincher But thanks for the Pro Tip.

If your dentist was under the influence of drugs and potentially sexually harassed you, I hope you've complained about it at places other than this thread.

my wife is a dentist and does not push any cosmetic work or any extra services. which is why she makes no money. very ethical.

I think that is rare. Not that the others are scumbags, but they definitely are in the business of upselling you.

We've had relatively good luck with both, but I will say our first trip to a vet in this area felt like we went to an auto salesman instead! We left there several hundred dollars poorer - and found another place we like more.

I've also had similar experiences with dentists, and found one I like a lot. He doesn't push anything on me. I was a bit afraid about going back to an American dentist here after several years overseas, and he was great.

My dog ate 1/2 tube of diaper rash cream but had no symptoms of sickness - To be sure everything would be ok I called the vet in Arlington (Glebe Road near the Giant) and they told me (of course) he needed to come in to be checked "just in case."

When I got there, they talked me in to pumping his stomach because and I quote, "he should be fine, but there is a small chance he will have serious complications that could be fatal." Against my gut feeling, I had the procedure done (for $600). I know, I am foolish, but I could never live with myself if my dog died from eating a freaking quarter tube of diaper rash cream. Even as I am writing this, I am feeling like a dumbass for letting them pump my dog's stomach.

You put your faith in these people because you don't know better yourself. They will take you for a ride whenever they can.

Wow. Well, good for you for outing yourself here so others can be more wary. I've been talked into crazy stuff by "pet food supply stores " like Petco, etc. I just become a complete sucker when it comes to buying things for my cat who mostly tortures me but I LOVE HER ANYWAY. Yep, I'm an idiot.

Definitely dentists.

I don't take my dog to the vet unless he has a medical emergency. That's only happened once in almost 5 years.

Next time something like this happens, fill a nasal aspirator with hydrogen peroxide and squirt it into your dog's mouth, making sure they gag-swallow it. If they don't throw up in five minutes, squirt another bulb full of hydrogen peroxide into their mouths. They will vomit up everything. Much cheaper than the vet. I've had to do this twice, to two separate dogs. It works.

This thread is pretty odd -- of all the professions that have screwed me, dentists (don't have a pet) are not even in the top 5.

Why are you picking on them?

My list.

1. Lawyers (I am one)
2. Mortgage brokers.
3. Car salesman
4. Bankers
5. Home repair

Beware of trusting yelp.com, insider.com, and kudzu.com reviews for Pender Veterinary Centre in Fairfax Va. I am an employee (soon to be ex) and they have recently asked their staff to write glowing reviews of the clinic in exchange for free movie tickets!

Neither. My vote is for the legal profession.

Vets - especially Clocktower in Herndon! Horrible and expensive. Crazy expensive.

How about his shots, checked for worms, and other things. It is wrong to have a pet and not give them them proper care.

That's not crabby, that's legit. That's sexual assault. The place to complain it the court system.

Wow... what's with picking on vets out of all professions out there? Vets obviously aren't in it for the money... otherwise they would've gone to med school. Vet school is way harder to get into and it costs the same as Med school (they're both 4 year professional colleges). In my opinion, vets know way more about everything too... MD's are stuck only knowing their specialty and have to refer you all the time.

If you google how much vets make, it says they start around $40,000 to $60,000. I also remember seeing a chart once that said vets are the lowest paid 4 year professional. I bet more than half of you make more than that and in all of your professions, you make PROFIT when you provide a service, why are you bashing vets when they make a profit? You do realize all human hospitals are in it for profit too, don't you?... you just don't see a lot of the cost because most of us have insurance which you also PAY FOR.

As for dentists, I can't defend them... they're average salary is over 6 digits and all they do is take care of teeth.. hell... vets are dentists and physicians rolled into one and they make less!
