Who Scams You More for Money - Dentists or Veterinarians?

Vets. They overcharge for the simplest things, including vaccines. Now I price shop; it's amazing the difference in charges between expensive N. Arlington and Dupont Circle with, say, Alexandria. I also refuse to do unnecessary tests (like the fecal test) and unnecessary vaccines.

And the county demands rabies shots, why can't they host shot clinics??

Um, they do? http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/mountvernon/documents/2017_town_meeting/fairfax_county_2017_rabies_clinics.pdf

Since Vets are getting all the heat right now I'm going to jump in with dentists.

In the past 3 years the dentist has increased the cost of the office visit and recommended all sorts of procedures and work that I've never needed before. This change appears to have happened between visits -like all of a sudden his kids needed to go to private school or something.

I am now of the firm belief you never take your pet to a clinic that has a hospital.

I know this is an old post but I don't think either "scams" for money. However, I do think a lot of vets have lost sight of the fact that it isn't reasonable to expect pet owners to be willing to spend whatever it takes to keep a pet alive until the pet is absolutely incurable and miserable. These belief that if you're going to get a pet, you need to be willing to shell out thousands upon thousands of dollars without a thought is unbelievable. I got grief from my vet for just ASKING what a surgical procedure would cost when I was only asking so I could make sure I had enough money in my account to cover it. I had every intention of getting the procedure done on my dog but you would have thought I drowned a puppy right in front of them by their reaction to me asking if they could provide a cost estimate.

I get it, they go into veterinary medicine because they love animals. But you can love your pet dearly while also not being able to swing an unexpected $7,000 bill for vet care.

Vets. I worked in a vet office while in grad school and I saw the markups on the meds that you can only get from them. And for the most part, all of the vets within the area keep the med prices within $5 of each other. There's no real shopping around.

Wow, I know this is old but holy out of touch with 99% of America, Batman:

To clarify:
...

If you want to be a responsible pet owner, put away a few thousand in a mutual fund each year for potential pet health care costs OR purchase health insurance for your pet so that you can afford to give your pet the care it deserves. I assume you plan for you kid's college education, ballet and tennis lessons, braces, and so on. Why don't you give some consideration to the pet who loves you as well? Because "being strict" or having to "check(ed)" or "putting a limit on what you're going to pay" your veterinarian hurts only one creature on this earth - your own pet.

This is why a lot of people really dislike vets. This complete and utter lack of understanding that telling people they need to set aside thousands of dollars in order to be a good pet owner is tone deaf nonsense.

I accidentally slept with my dentist - I guess I was the sucker.

Anonymous wrote:About 8 years ago I went to a dentist in Arlington (Gentry and Coutin for those that are interested) and they told me I had something like 7 cavities and it was going to be really expensive for me to fill them...I can't remember the charge, but it was too much for me in my early to mid 20s. My uncle is a dentist in Fl. so I decided to wait until I went down there for a visit so he could fix me up for free. He did the xrays, and low and behold he told me I had no cavities. He said sometimes, and it's unfortunate, dentists will do these types of things. I was horrified.

Had something similar in Northern VA around the same time. Finally found a trustworthy dentist be referral from a coworker after going though 3 or 4 scam artists.

My husband is a lawyer. He set up the trust of this local vet. The place was a shithole, she acted stingy and poor, she had one employee she paid like $10/hour to. I kid you not she was making $800,000 a year cold hard cash!

Vets. Having pets is optional, having teeth is not, or shouldn't be.

I dated medical students during grad school -- they were just as money hungry and soulless as the law and MBA students.
