Why I'm not CIOing

It does not "teach" your child to sleep at night. Neglected babies do the very same thing -- is that from "sleep training" too? Are neglected babies one step ahead of nurtured babies because they have been "trained" to sleep through the night? No. Of course not.

The government has all kinds of parental behaviors that it determines are bad for children -- so bad that if "choose" to do them to your kids, then the government takes your kids away from you. Did you not know that? Really?

So let's say for the sake of argument that CIO will become illegal. How exactly do you propose that particular piece of legislation be enforced? Just curious. Hidden cameras implanted under baby's skin at birth?

You clearly have no idea what sleep training entails. Go educate yourself before you come to a public forum and make idiotic statements like this. Even anonymously.

OMG. You people are crazy. The OP was sharing - that what this page is here for. And you women hijacked the shit out of it, and went nuts.

Do I let DC CIO? No, because I don't have to. Baby goes to sleep with minimal fuss. I see both sides - sometimes our dear children need to cry it out, and sometimes they don't! Sometimes, they are not tired! Happens to adults too. Sometimes they are.

You all need to tap into that uncrazy part of yourself and get a grip. Put your nastiness away. Do what's right for you, and be happy for others.

The very same way all the other child abuse and child neglect laws already on the books are already being enforced -- maybe even easier since people can hear your baby screaming for hours on end.

Umm can you read? She is not just posting she is also saying that people who use CIO are the equivalent to people who are cruel to their babies. Its absolutely disgusting what this woman is spewing out to people. As another pp said, she is entitled to her opinion, but how dare she make people using CIO out to be abusive parents.

NP here. PP, do you mind telling us what going to sleep with minimal fuss means? I'm not being sarcastic, just truly curious. Does minimal fussing mean some protest whining? We put our child in and he whines for 3 to 10 mins before going to sleep. We used a sleep consultant and she said that if he distress cries, to go in and comfort him, repeat until he falls asleep. We are on night 5 of this sleep training and amazingly it's worked like a charm. Night wakings are down to one and he babbles a little and then falls back asleep, whereas before he would wake numerous times, and it would take an hour or more each time to get him back to sleep. Do people consider this CIO?

Minimal fuss, for us, is a little whining or protest. Sometimes crying, but less than 2 minutes, then she falls asleep. There are rare nights she protests and screams for more than a few minutes. We take her out, and let her stay up for another half hour, then try bed again. When we do take her out, she hangs out in the living room with us and plays with her toys or reads her books. I really don't mind doing this with her because like I said, it's so rare, and she's so good about going to sleep the rest of the time.

If your baby screams for more than 5 minutes, then yes, i would say your are CIO. Babbling is adorable, not CIO at all.

Again, you have no idea what sleep training is. Most methods advocate checking on the baby every few minutes. And how the hell would people tell that a baby is not colicky, teething, has an ear infection or all of the above. But of course, you, oh perfect parent have all the answers so I'm sure you'll find a way. Good luck with your open-minded, non judgmental parenting style. I am sure you are going to raise a similarly amazing human being.

Thanks, 21:35. As instructed by our sleep trainer (recommended by many here on DCUM), we don't let him scream for more than 5 mins. And actually, since starting the training, he actually has not screamed at all. It's amazing.

Prior to this, when he would wake up for the hour a time, he WOULD be screaming hysterically and we would try to rock him back to sleep, hold him, walk around with him, etc. and it literally made him even madder. He would arch his back and try to climb out of our arms. That was like CIO in our arms. Something clearly wasn't working.

We videotaped the wakings and when the trainer saw it, she said he was clearly telling us he did NOT want us to rock him/hold him and that we were doing it all wrong. She was right- who knew?

OK, so I went back and re-read every post from the OP. She didn't say people who CIO are cruel to their babies; someone else talked about CIO being illegal. OP might have gotten defensive after everyone jumped down her throat, but she's repeatedly stated that she was just sharing, because she's thrilled with her choice. I really don't think she meant to get everyone defending their right to raise their child!

Checking on your baby isn't want your baby needs; it if were, they would stop crying and go back to sleep after you check on them. But they don't, do they.

Aww, I'm so glad it worked out! I used to try to co-nap with my baby, and she would have none of it! I got so frustrated, one day I laid her in the crib to give myself a break, and she was sleeping right away. Who knew indeed!

Well its hard to tell because there is some zealot who I thought was OP but maybe not. I see what you mean. However, if not OP the other woman is totally ruining OPS thread then with her crazy ramblings.
