Loudoun Parents - prepare to be out all next week

Son's coach says tomorrow (Friday) will be cancelled. No idea if that's good info though.

Chicago is off Friday because it'll be 40 below with the wind chill and that was a little surprising. Or will VA schools be out because of predicted ice storm issues and lack of electricity?

It's twofold.

Not enough snow to invest in the type and numbers of equipment you'd get in a location that gets snow all winter and can quickly handle it.

Cultural expectation from people who have never lived anywhere with snow that it is not possible and/or safe to carry on with life with snow/ice. There are people who think it is unsafe to go outdoors or have children go outdoors if there is a chance of any snow or ice anywhere under their feet. I think this reason is the main driver.

The second is so true. They seem to think kids cannot stand on any snow or ice at the bus stop and kids cannot wait for a bus for 5 minutes in the cold.

Genuinely the last time we were closed for an ENTIRE week was 2016 after Jonas. Once every ten years is not that terrible.

Same reason the elementary kids don't go outside for recess if it's below 32.

The amount of teachers who live in other impacted areas and would have trouble getting here along with the areas that I guess weren’t plowed … probably cancel. But idk, I’m not great at guessing these things.

This doesn’t occur to her because in Buffalo where she is from they have massive fleets for snow removal that we don’t so the snow might not be piled on the corners like it is here. We have contractors in pickup trucks with shovels on the front who just push it there because they can’t actually remove it . The kids will be in the middle of the road for the bus and that’s how she likes it!

My kid has a 10 minute (on normal days without snow and ice) walk to the bus stop down a large and steep hill, on the road. The road is covered in black ice. She then usually waits about 5-10 minutes for the bus to come. That's 15-20 minutes in single digit temperatures (right now its showing 0-7 degrees).

Teachers can get out just fine to meet friends for lunch or to take their kids to dance.

You’re griping at me like I make these calls! They just might do a 2 hour delay tomorrow literally none of us know.

Sort of. But Americans are litigious and if a kid or school employee slips and falls on the ice, you know there will be a lawsuit. Additionally, my HS kid's bus is routinely 20 minutes late. And the bus stops near my house are all akin to glaciers right now.

Okay but Boston, Chicago are also in America and they go back to school quickly from these events.

Boston and Chicago have massive fleets prepared for snow removal as large amounts of snow are their norm. We don’t. They also have tons of public transportation options… Loudoun is CAR centric. Don’t be dense with these silly comparisons.
