Loudoun Parents - prepare to be out all next week

If we go back Thursday or Friday, it’s a bonus, but you should have a plan and preparation for the whole week if the 10-12 inches actually materializes.

If we get that much snow in Arlington we’ll open 2 hours late Wednesday at the earliest

In 2016 when Jonas dumped 20 inches on us we were out the entire week. Depending on how bad this one is that is easily possible- the temps will not be above 20 all week with lows at night 5-10 degrees . There will be NO melt a very hard time getting to secondary roads. If it’s in the 12+ range, it will be Friday at BEST and possibly all week. Our principal told us to take our laptops home today because grades have to be posted Wednesday and they seem to believe it’s likely we won’t be back by then. (LCPS teacher)

This might be a dumb question, but why? Do you not have snow plows and salt trucks in your area? Chicago is off Friday because it'll be 40 below with the wind chill and that was a little surprising. Or will VA schools be out because of predicted ice storm issues and lack of electricity?

Yup, same here. We’ve seen this all before. And the excuse is always “BuT wEsTeRn LoUdOuN” and their quaint gravel roads that defy plowing.

So glad ours in graduating this year.

I agree with OP and I’m the opposite of MAGA. Not sure what that has to do with anything, btw.

LCPS teacher here. I’m so happy to have next week off. I’ll use a medical excuse to NOT start so early this August as I have a cruise travel booked until the 3rd week of August.

Next year starts a week earlier than allowed. Schools can only start up to 2 weeks before Labor Day but Loudoun is starting 3 weeks before Labor Day. Teachers appear to be starting August 10 and students August 17. Despite that the last day in 2027 isn't until June 11 for students and June 15 for teachers! The school year is at least a week too long!

There is also a calendar out for 2027-28 It goes August 19-June 14 for students and August 13-June 16. The school years are a week too long at minimum. The teacher year goes longer than 10 months which screams year round but unlike actual year round school only has 2 breaks instead of 4 or 5. https://files-backend.assets.thrillshare.com/documents/asset/uploaded_file/4461/Lcps/33240cf3-0dab-476a-a973-dd2b3e5c84b7/FY28-Calendar---Final.pdf?disposition=inline

Loudoun proposed or was considering it many years ago. Eastern half would go to school, western half would stay home. Let's just say that with all the complaining...no one actually wanted it and the initiative/proposal never passed. Loudoun also has no cap on snow days, so no worries about making up the days missed. I believe they get 15 and whatever happens after that happens.

It's twofold.

Not enough snow to invest in the type and numbers of equipment you'd get in a location that gets snow all winter and can quickly handle it.

Cultural expectation from people who have never lived anywhere with snow that it is not possible and/or safe to carry on with life with snow/ice. There are people who think it is unsafe to go outdoors or have children go outdoors if there is a chance of any snow or ice anywhere under their feet. I think this reason is the main driver.

I was wondering this too! The only waiver to the two week rule appears to be year round programs which does not apply to Loudoun. Does Loudoun not know they are in violation? Who do we report it to because I’d like to start a week later for a variety of reasons (not a teacher.) The school board is so incompetent.

It would be so impractical - many staff live on the “opposite” side of the county where they work, so they’d just call out if they had work and their kids didn’t have school.
