interesting article on Chinese American shift to the right

This is just an NYT DEI version of "old people conservative". Nothing Chinese about it.

Chinese Americans who immigrated here and who actually lived under communism are turning into hardcore Trump supporters. They are horrified at the messaging in NY wrt all the free stuff being promised, laxity on crime, and increasing taxes to make a bigger state. I didn't realize how badly Kamala had tanked with Chinese Americans. What a disaster.

I doubt it’s just Chinese Americans. Frankly, most of the Asian immigrants I know are very conservative. That’s not necessarily true for their kids, but it is for the original immigrants.

Exactly. I'm surprised there is any room left for a "shift."
A lot of Asians are centered in cities, that vote more Democrat.
Maybe more conservative in the suburbs.

Chinese have multiple reasons to shift right.
Not prosecuting crime, a lot of attacks against Chinese go unpunished, and Democrats compound it by claiming it is white MAGA doing the attacks.
Ending gifted programs and advanced classes.

Trust me. You MAGA are alienating them in the spot they care about most, their own children.

They didn't come here to set them up in a trash country.

But then again, you are MAGA, you have no ability to make America great again.

You are so mediocre and some subpar

Don't forget firing government scientists, cutting science funding, blocking immigration and student/worker visas, and blaming Chinese people for spreading COVID, and accusing them all of being Communist spies.

Oops.

People ignored by politics (except to be hated) tend to oppose all incumbents.

In terms of elections if you're a Democrat, it's not a disaster. There are not that many Chinese Americans and many are in solidly blue states.

The point is that Kamala tanked by 20 frigging percentage points with Chinese Americans compared to the prior presidential election. Sure, Chinese Americans are a small cohort, but it is a canary in the coal mine for how things are going for the Dems. Losing 20 percentage points is massive. Latinos are a massive group and are shifting right too Why did Trump get so many Latino votes?

I don’t doubt that Latinos are shifting right since many of them come from countries with authoritarian leaders, which often makes them prefer “strong leaders,” and are religiously conservative. But that may change the more this administration goes after Latinos—and not just the undocumented ones—in such an unrelenting and cruel way. They’re literally being singled out for abuse by this administration, more so than any other group in this country. And the polls are already starting to shift.

“Trump's approval rating among Hispanics has declined sharply to **27%** in the latest October 2025 AP-NORC poll, down from 41% in March 2025 and 48% in the 2024 election.”

If Trump and Stephen Miller keep this up, they may cause the GOP to lose Hispanic voters for a long time to come.

The funny thing about conservatives of all races/religions is that their unifying politics is their racism, which makes it awkward when different races/religions are in the same country, compared to when they are separate ethnostates.

It's a paywalles NYT article, so the MAGA trolls obviously didn't read it before commenting.

They value a traditional family structure and believe deeply that hard work and individual sacrifice are pathways to prosperity and a better life.

They believe admission to elite universities and institutions should be on the basis of unbiased quantifiable stats.

They have no tolerance for crime, particularly violent crime.

Of course there are plenty of areas where there major differences… but it isn’t hard to see why some would identify with the Republicans, particularly since the Harvard lawsuit.

Also, play the system as hard as you can to get ahead, cheating is mandatory, and life has no value except your own family, and children must obey their parents' every whim.

It's odd to me that Chinese Americans want to have themselves arrested and deported.

Exactly this. Trump wouldn't hesitate to deport them in a second. Except unless they were Chinese billionaires.

And they could pay him to stay.

Why are people so frickin stupid?

Immigrants pulling up the ladder behind them too.

With the way things are going for American farmers, Trump is about to force them into “land reform with American characteristics.”

Immigrants tend to be blinded by their priors. They are certainly hard workers and creative, but they lapse into familiar politics. 1st gen Chinese should be able to smell this BS from a mile away, but they also really really hate black people.

Lol yes he would hesitate, unless he is ready to blow up all relations with China.

The Chinese government is going to be upset that we are sending ethnic Chinese back to China? Explain.

In what world do you think the CCP would be ok with the humiliation of having the Chinese diaspora rejected and deported back to China? You are insane if you think Xi would be fine with that. Sure he could use the people and the human capital but he can't live with the humiliation since saving face is a huge component of Chinese culture. And the Chinese diaspora is very strategically/culturally important for China.

I'm a Dem and even I have to admit that the far left of our party are, indeed communists. And equity policies almost always discriminate against Asians.

Reality check:

The communists are only 1% of America. They do not even remotely define "Democrats." Very few Democrats agree with actual communism.

This is not the result of actual Democrat policies. It's the result of 24x7 hysterical shrieking by right wing pundits who have polluted the airwaves and social media, who sling strawmen, exaggerate, cherrypick and smear Democrats nonstop.
Reality check: The Biden/Harris ticket in 2020 released an animated video on equity where they promised that everyone would end up in the same place. That's functionally communism. And that's from mainstream Dems who I usually support. Far left Dems like Mamdani are even more blatant about their communist goals. The more "free" stuff the government hands out (paid for by other people) the more communist that government is.

You have access to more information than at any other time in history and you still come in with this weak understanding of reality? Sad.

The playing the system part and cheating are a consequence of communist China, not Chinese culture. But yes family first is very much a cultural thing.

Anonymous wrote:This really isn't news if you are connected to the Chinese American community. My parents are first gen and it is very clear that demographic favors trump (or maybe more accurate to say they hate Democrats). Reasons:
- democratic rhetoric in recent years remind them of rhetoric from the cultural revolution.
- most came here legally and with great hardship and took great pains assimilating. They perceive illegals as greatly unfair.
- Chinese culture is ultimately conservative, so a better value fit with Republicans.
- Chinese culture greatly values the family and family helping each other. This makes first gen immigrants hate taxes because they have the mentality of saving to use for their family. They do not rely on social safety net. Chinese culture has a very strong family vs stranger mentality and there is not as much emphasis on helping those outside your immediate circle. So in this aspect, also a better fit with Republican values.

Ironic given how anti-science and anti-education MAGA are.

Oh the irony.

Some basic understanding of history would solve this problem. But let’s do the things that led to communism all over again, here.
