interesting article on Chinese American shift to the right

Exactly. I'm surprised there is any room left for a "shift."
A lot of Asians are centered in cities, that vote more Democrat.

Sure, the city as a whole may vote more Democrat. That doesn't mean a given subgroup tends to vote Democrat.

I am honestly surprised that this could even be news.

Why are people so frickin stupid?

They have PTSD and lots of trauma from their ordeal in the Old Country. Former USSR immigrants are similarly drawn to authoritarian figures. It’s comforting when they perceive themselves to be on the “correct side” of the authoritarian. Same thing happened in Israel with all their former USSR émigrées

Poll is among asian americans rather than specific to chinese americans, but still...

Buyers remorse already, that is quite a jump in disapproval rates

+1 First of all, this article isn’t about voting for Trump and Harris, it’s about the NYC mayoral election. But most importantly, you all are still bragging about how many people of each subgroup voted for Trump when they’ve all backed away really quickly. Trump has reversed every single gain MAGA made less than a year later. Not every poll separates out Chinese Americans FFS, but his approval numbers among young voters, Asian Americans, Blacks, and Latinos are abysmal. Independents view him less favorably now than they did Biden AFTER his disastrous debate. Biden was 28/60 with independent voters in that Post/ABC poll, and Trump is now 30/69 with indies.

Chinese Americans who immigrated here and who actually lived under communism are turning into hardcore Trump supporters. They are horrified at the messaging in NY wrt all the free stuff being promised, laxity on crime, and increasing taxes to make a bigger state. I didn't realize how badly Kamala had tanked with Chinese Americans. What a disaster.

In terms of elections if you're a Democrat, it's not a disaster. There are not that many Chinese Americans and many are in solidly blue states.

The point is that Kamala tanked by 20 frigging percentage points with Chinese Americans compared to the prior presidential election. Sure, Chinese Americans are a small cohort, but it is a canary in the coal mine for how things are going for the Dems. Losing 20 percentage points is massive. Latinos are a massive group and are shifting right too Why did Trump get so many Latino votes?

I don’t doubt that Latinos are shifting right since many of them come from countries with authoritarian leaders, which often makes them prefer “strong leaders,” and are religiously conservative. But that may change the more this administration goes after Latinos—and not just the undocumented ones—in such an unrelenting and cruel way. They’re literally being singled out for abuse by this administration, more so than any other group in this country. And the polls are already starting to shift.

“Trump's approval rating among Hispanics has declined sharply to **27%** in the latest October 2025 AP-NORC poll, down from 41% in March 2025 and 48% in the 2024 election.”

If Trump and Stephen Miller keep this up, they may cause the GOP to lose Hispanic voters for a long time to come.

+1 Especially when ICE tactics mean Hispanic citizens can be detained and questioned for simply appearing Hispanic.

Very common to take what you have for granted and vote only based on what you don't have but want, not realizing what it will cost you or if you will get what is promised.

Most of this thread feels bizarre, inorganic and built upon a rickety framework of bogus strawmen ("DeMS ArE CoMMuNIstS!!!" "deMs ArE RacISts whO HatE AsIAns!!!" etc)

Many aspects of Chinese culture align very well with what you would expect to hear from the American right.

They value a traditional family structure and believe deeply that hard work and individual sacrifice are pathways to prosperity and a better life.

They believe admission to elite universities and institutions should be on the basis of unbiased quantifiable stats.

They have no tolerance for crime, particularly violent crime.

Of course there are plenty of areas where there major differences… but it isn’t hard to see why some would identify with the Republicans, particularly since the Harvard lawsuit.

No Asian immigrants didn't vote to trash the country's economy and intellectual standing in the world. Things their kids are good at. Not manufacturing or trades.

They, number 1, voted to have opportunities for their kids in the future. You may have conned the with the "black kids took your child's spot at Harvard."

But guaranteed, when their kids get out, they are leaving the country or even back to China for better opportunities. They aren't going to find them in the U.S. for the foreseeable future.

Most of the uber wealthy Chinese who do this aren’t citizens, so they can’t vote. They fly here, have birth to get citizenship for their kids and then send them to English boarding schools, then Harvard.

This really isn't news if you are connected to the Chinese American community. My parents are first gen and it is very clear that demographic favors trump (or maybe more accurate to say they hate Democrats). Reasons:
- democratic rhetoric in recent years remind them of rhetoric from the cultural revolution.
- most came here legally and with great hardship and took great pains assimilating. They perceive illegals as greatly unfair.
- Chinese culture is ultimately conservative, so a better value fit with Republicans.
- Chinese culture greatly values the family and family helping each other. This makes first gen immigrants hate taxes because they have the mentality of saving to use for their family. They do not rely on social safety net. Chinese culture has a very strong family vs stranger mentality and there is not as much emphasis on helping those outside your immediate circle. So in this aspect, also a better fit with Republican values.

😳
Talk about brainwashed.

I really find immigrants wanting to violently attack immigrants revolting. I hope your parents know they would be handcuffed leaving their check-in at courthouse in 2025.

Thing is MAGAs hate most immigrants who aren't white, legal or not.

It's odd to me that Chinese Americans want to have themselves arrested and deported.
