Why is Georgia so popular?

Anonymous
I sometimes think about southern cities for the same reason I think about northern ones: college is three seasons of the year, and not summer. I think about whether my kids will hate or love the coldest part of the year in a particular place and the hottest part of the year is kind of irrelevant for their college experience.

Chatham County (of which Savannah is part) went 59% for Kamala. I am just going by the 2024 election results.

Have you spent any time there? It’s not liberal even if most didn’t vote for Trump.

Our kids are in Northeast wealthy town and the public schools led by liberal teachers(99.9 only moderates are the custodians) receive daily indoctrination. Best day for us was when Trump swamped the Dems and the teachers’ faces said it all. Loads of moderate and conservative families are sending kids to UGA, SEC , Vandy and Duke. Tough to beat great weather, improving academic reputations, strong social life, sports and attractive kids.

I have spent significant time in Savannah proper and it feels fairly liberal. I don't know what it is you are after in terms of defining liberal vs. I guess just maybe a Clinton Democrat.

Yes, just because Savanah votes heavily Democratic doesn't mean those voters are not conservative.

Boston also has a lot of fairly conservative Democratic voters. Lots of the Boston Irish.

Sure, no just please show us any high school matriculation stats in your town to back-up anything you say. We will wait.

Savannah has one of the largest St Pats celebrations and paraded n the country. Those families are definitely not liberal.

Some people have to get out of the liberal cities rent a Zip car or take an Uber to most wealthy towns in New England or Midwest. The number of expensive cars with SEC schools decals is huge and getting bigger every year. Undeniable.

I get that kids want warm weather and big football, but there are a bunch of schools that tick those boxes so curious why Georgia seems disproportionally popular with mcps W schools (maybe privates as well).

Not really though. UF, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, and Clemson are more popular with MCPS. Only 16 kids from these MCPS schools: all the Ws, BCC, Poolesville, and Einstein, are attending UGA from the 2025 class. It is not disproportionately popular by any means compared to other schools.

UofSC, UTK, Clemson are UGA safeties. Those kids you know going to those schools were rejected by UGA.

It also depends on racial/ethnic composition of the suburbs too. Some ethnic groups lean towards certain political parties.

Not everyone gets into Clemson. Over 50 percent don't. Just saying.

I wouldn't say that. A lot of kids prefer the south. It's just a fact these days.
