Why is Georgia so popular?

Maybe I’m just paying closer attention now that my kids are approaching college, but it seems like a big uptick in interest in Georgia. I get that kids want warm weather and big football, but there are a bunch of schools that tick those boxes so curious why Georgia seems disproportionally popular with mcps W schools (maybe privates as well).

Atlanta, I’d assume. I mean Athens isn’t Atlanta, but UGA is a lot closer to a major airport than most other southern flagships.

Because college admissions have become so competitive, people are starting to consider a broader range of locations.
Also, the US News public school rankings and Georgia’s relatively cheap OOS tuition help.

Lots of smart well-rounded kids, great academics, great college town. Visit and you’ll shed your Northeastern/DMV prejudices and reservations. I did.

It’s a top 50 school…which helps.

They also provide a decent amount of merit if your stats are 1/2 decent.

It has over 30% acceptance rate and 20% yield for OOS. Doesn't seem so popular.

Big state flagship that gives merit to oos.

My company’s hq is in Atlanta and we get a lot of college interns. They are bright, positive kids who are focused on the work. I could see why a school full of them would be appealing.

Thanks to merit, it was cheaper than some in state options for us

It's not that common for VA kids.

Athens is cute, but it's still in a red state so not on the list.

Yeah, but Atlanta's like a little piece of the atlantic seaboard that floated down and lodged itself in the craw of the south. And retained its identity.

I regard the State of Georgia as Heaven On Earth. Beautiful, varied geography and very attractive people.

The University of Georgia is so popular that it has experienced significant growth over the past 25 years, nevertheless it is still a wonderful place to attend & to experience college. Great weather during the academic year.
