Race-based verbal attack-- what would you do?

Anonymous
Here’s what you do next time you see this happen.

You interrupt and say something nice about the person. It’s extremely disarming to the racist person. They are othering the clerk. Trying to create a separation. You need to close that separation.

Aboriginal Americans aren’t “native” to the new world either. They’re immigrants too.

They displaced the megafauna that used to freely roam the Americas. They committed the first acts of driving animal species to extinction.

Let’s not pretend “native Americans” are innocent here, ok?

They are here before you.

So?

And I was here before you, too. What’s your point?

It’s not up to debate. Aboriginal Americans aren’t native to the Americas. They came here from Asia. They caused the extinction of dozens of species of animals that lived here for millions of years before “native Americans” arrived and wiped them out. This is settled science.

You seem to assign some bizarre importance to the fact that they were the first. Like, they’re the first looter through the broken window into the store.

That makes them special?

You’re a weirdo.

I got verbally attacked by an onlooker for calmly correcting/calling out racist behaviour (of a check out person)- someone behind me (who didn't see what happened) decided to pipe up like I was being the jerk. I let both the idiots go and no longer shop at that place. So you can't win, really.

That was very kind of you to do OP.

As an Asian myself, I find when strangers are rude to me & want to attack me “below the belt,” they sometimes tell me to go back to China (not my native country btw).
Once some guy yelled at me for my driving -> he told me I was just another stupid Asian who couldn’t drive!!

So of course I may be prejudiced here.
But you were correct to just leave it at what you said then leave because you never know what could provoke a complete stranger these days.

But it is always good to advocate on behalf of others which is something I try to do often. 😃

What I would do is: realize the op made this whole thing up; it never happened.

She posts these fictional troll-stories every few
Weeks here on DCUM, for some bizarre reason.

This isn’t true. Yes, humans drove all megafauna to extinction outside of Africa, but the first area humans migrated to was Europe. Meaning the very first place humans drove megafauna to extinction was Europe, not the Americas.

OP, I don’t think you’re a troll. And even if you are, there is some good wisdom here. I have been the person at whom the comments were directed, I appreciated someone at least noticing the interaction and trying to support - it can lesson the shock.

And, maybe the posters calling OP a troll are troll…. Seems like they’re going to great lengths to divert attention to try to normalize this type of behavior. Perhaps the person is scared by people coming together to identify ways to call out hateful racists behavior, which should NOT be normalized.

You must be white since you can’t fathom this happening. This has happened to me multiple times in the last 5 years.

Yesterday I popped in to my local convenience store to get coffee on the way to work. As I was leaving, the white man in line behind me had a disagreement with an Asian woman behind the counter and became verbally aggressive ("You people should just go back where you came from" and similar comments on and on). I felt the need to speak up, so I addressed the man with "OK, you've made your point, time to let it go." I wanted to offer some support for the employee, but I didn't want to further escalate the situation. He did lower his voice and just muttered under his breath. I left at that point. I kept thinking about it all day, though, and wondering if there was something more I could have done.

10/10 this never happened.

Reads like ragebait troll thread. Not even creative.

You must be super stupid to think this doesn’t happen all the time. Either that or MAGA and you endorse it .

The only racist I know of is Joy Reid. And she got fired for being a racist.

The only people I’ve EVER seen say racist things to asian people are black guys in carry outs and corner stores or liquor stores in ratchet neighborhoods.

I spend a lot of time in these neighborhoods working with clients, and I regularly visit these types of stores. Most are operated by Korean or Vietnamese people who have the place as a family business. And I have personally witnessed a LOT of verbal abuse directed at them exclusively from black males.

While I think the OP of this thread is making the whole thing up, I DO know stuff like this happens, because I’ve witnessed it personally. But it’s not white guys doing it. It’s black guys.

We should at least have an honest conversation about that.
