Race-based verbal attack-- what would you do?

Anonymous
My personal belief after traveling all over the world is that 90 percent of humanity is pretty good.

But those 10 percent?

If I were Emperor of the World, I would find all the sociopaths and psychopaths and lock them up forever and take them out of the gene pool.

Whether they are on Wall Street or in the convenience store. It's such a tiny minority of people that make life miserable for everyone else. And I do believe it's a brain disorder. No normal, healthy person harasses anyone in a convenience store.

This is what involuntary institutionalism is all about. And I am for it.

There have been racial slurs thrown at people in America since the 1600s, there is no novel way to approach that has yet to be found.

Honestly, there is something one could do. Record and post to social media and out the person. It actually is a pretty effective way to shame this type of behavior.

I hate people who tell others to go back to where they come from. Unless you are native Americans, we are all in the same boat.

I am an Asian woman and have had people yelling at me to go back to my country often (I was born here).

No one ever intervenes so OP, I appreciate that you said something.

It doesn't even matter exactly what you said. It matters that you stood up and said something, and showed support for the woman. It was also wise to not provoke him further, and to protect yourself at the same time.

Thank you.

Aboriginal Americans aren’t “native” to the new world either. They’re immigrants too.

They displaced the megafauna that used to freely roam the Americas. They committed the first acts of driving animal species to extinction.

Let’s not pretend “native Americans” are innocent here, ok?

What sorts of people yell this at you?

Is it only white men?

So?

And I was here before you, too. What’s your point?

It’s not up to debate. Aboriginal Americans aren’t native to the Americas. They came here from Asia. They caused the extinction of dozens of species of animals that lived here for millions of years before “native Americans” arrived and wiped them out. This is settled science.

You seem to assign some bizarre importance to the fact that they were the first. Like, they’re the first looter through the broken window into the store.

That makes them special?

Yesterday I popped in to my local convenience store to get coffee on the way to work. As I was leaving, the white man in line behind me had a disagreement with an Asian woman behind the counter and became verbally aggressive ("You people should just go back where you came from" and similar comments on and on). I felt the need to speak up, so I addressed the man with "OK, you've made your point, time to let it go." I wanted to offer some support for the employee, but I didn't want to further escalate the situation. He did lower his voice and just muttered under his breath. I left at that point. I kept thinking about it all day, though, and wondering if there was something more I could have done.

You lucked out. You should MYOB in those situations, as white knighting is a good way to get yourself hurt or in legal trouble.

Many times, both parties in the argument will turn their attention and anger toward anyone trying to butt into their arguments.

Wow - troll thread made it to 3 pages

(But OP still made it all up. Never happened)

I concur.

I ran into an almost identical situation a few years ago in a store, right down to the nasty language spoken by the customer to the cashier, so unfortunately this is very believable.
OP, good for you for saying something. And I think it was wise that you didn’t fully take the person on… You never know who is dangerous, unstable, and/or carrying a weapon. Well done.
In my case at the store, I did call and asked to speak to a manager after leaving the store, and let him know what happened and what a great job the employee did with the guy.

“Ok you’ve made your point?” What the actual F.

I hope you’re ashamed of how you handled this situation.
