Allegedly.

https://wtop.com/dc/2023/07/dc-council-passes-crime-bill-gives-police-green-light-for-high-speed-chases/

The bill clarifies that the police department can authorize officers to engage in pursuits when necessary.

The legislation retains “strict limits on pursuits,” allowing them only where the fleeing suspect has committed a crime of violence or poses an imminent threat to public safety and where pursuit is necessary and can be conducted in a way that mitigates the risk of injury to innocent people.

That sure seems to fit the circumstance OP is describing.

Note, legally imminent threat is:

The threat must be immediate and unavoidable, distinguishing it from speculative or future dangers, which do not justify preemptive action.

Maybe I’ll have my son follow and report these riders to MPD if they still offer a $250 reward per capture. That could be a lucrative summer job.

Yes, they are told not to arrest because it disproportionally criminalizes Black and brown behavior.

Politicians forget that the erosion of quality of life this causes also disproportionately impacts Black and brown community members.

I thought it was because the process of arresting the riders would involve multiple police vehicles chasing the ATVs in residential neighborhoods— thereby putting the residents and other pedestrians in even greater risk.

Surely this could be done with video/camera and identification/prosecution later. If someone's photo isn't publicly online, then sure, there's no case, but I bet all of these people are on social media somewhere

DC voters overwhelmingly approve of the ATV riders. There is zero will to shut this down.

100% this.

You voted for illegal ATVs and marijuana stench. Now stop complaining about what you voted for.

It takes the "uneducated" cop to point out the obvious to people with fancy receipts. Perhaps the worst thing about all those super hero movies, is that you all think cops can disable bad guys easily without hurting them.

Are you having a mental episode?

I'm always hazy on the relationship between the U.S. attorney's office and the DC government, but isn't this something that Jeannine Pirro could fix?

Moped driver blowing stop sign at 40 mph: no penalty

Motorcyclist blowing stop sign at 40 mph: no penalty

Cyclist with infant placed in basket in front of bike: no penalty

Cyclist with two small children on back with no helmets: no penalty

Car driver going 50 mph in a 25 mph zone with no traffic cameras: no penalty

Car driver doesnt stop at stop sign for full three seconds at empty intersection with camera: $100, doubled after 30 days

hmmm. we have the largest police force on a per capita basis in the country. if only there was a way to fix this....

“Police will be prosecuted in court.”

The Baltimore police got the message loud and clear following Freddy Grey. The message is: the mayors office is out to get you. The prosecutors office wants to convict you.

DC is the same way. The suburban counties make this abundantly clear: Steve Descano won’t prosecute dangerous rapists and murders, but he is DESPERATE to find police officers to put behind bars.

Thinks about it: the the environment we have created in DC and Baltimore, what would you do as a police officer?

Seriously think about it: why would you risk arresting anyone if your career were in jeopardy?

“Yall voted for this.”

You have DC politicians in news reports defending roving bands of criminal stunt bikers as people promoting their culture.

I’d love to see the Venn diagram of masked ATV criminals, masked smash and grab criminals and criminals that illegally possess firearms.

The far left needs to stop demonizing the police. That's where all this comes from.

What? These are just D.C. residents displaying their culture and skill on dirt bikes. Are you suggesting they are dangerous people?

There was a MPD cop that chased down an ate rider and killed them a couple years ago. Is that what you were hoping for OP?

Everyone: WATCH THE YOUTUBE VIDEO.

It’s posted above. The local news recorded a DC resident seriously characterizing dirt-bikers and ATV riders as just “displaying culture and skill.”

He literally believes it. MANY DC residents actually believe this.

Our politicians will do nothing substantial to curtail this.
