I’m a practicing Catholic Democrat and also am happy with the choice. Pope Francis liked him and appointed him to significant positions. In his first address, he talked about building bridges and God loving everyone.

I'm Protestant with several Catholic friends, both practicing and lapsed, and I liked Pope Francis and I am ready to like this pope too.

If you like misogyny,, you gotta love the Catholic Church.

After I saw them do some shenanigans with birth certificates to get two more people a vote, I figured we would end up with a transgender pope.

Please say more!

Vatican made 2 cardinals younger to make them eligible under Vatican's age discrimination law (only under-80 can vote)

Only 1 votes though.

PP is just a bigot troll.
You don't get a "transgender pope" by adding two African cardinals to the voter rolls. African Catholics are very conservative.

I think he was picked to root out the MAGAs in the US Catholic Church. Look no further than the Diocese of Arlington.

It was a clever movie reference. Not a bigot troll response.

Now that the US has really been knocked down with its international relations, currency, economy, leadership, etc., it's ok to have an American Pope. Just another data point as we track the downfall.

I am hardly a MAGA but all this does is cement the US further as a global leader? What are you even talking about?

Too early to tell, but if he takes any of the core humanitarian stances of his predecessor, a showdown looms with Trump and U.S. foreign policy.

He is generally fairly progressive and has tweeted support for immigrants in the US and against White Supremacy.

Thank goodness we need more humanity and intelligence. America voted enough evil in for the whole world.

Hopefully, Pope Leo XIV will be as successful as John Paul II.

I’m glad they chose an American pope if only as an antidote to the right wing noise machine. Most Catholics do not identify with the JD Vance cruelty

Bet Leonard Leo has his undies in a twist lol

No. It is largely understood that the US would never produce a pope until it was no longer the top power.

Is that an actual thing or is it just what people said to rationalize why there hadn’t been one? There are *lots* of places that haven’t had a pope.

It’s another conspiracy theory brought to us by one of our America-hating regulars.

That’s such a lot to say. Can’t we just stick with “Democrats”? It’s so much more efficient.

GTFO, no one fetishized abortion. Your hyperbole is disgusting.

Exactly. And I don’t think this guy was elected pope by accident. He’s the anti Trump. It’s a great choice.

Let’s be clear that he’s not just “anti Trump”, he actually sounds like a real Christian and he’s calling Trump et al out on their fake Christianity.

Trump is way more like the anti-Christ. The Vatican is not having it. I appreciate them using their power to fight evil.

He spent 20 years in Peru and that's where he became a bishop (instead of in the US). He then went to the Vatican where he was placed in powerful positions in the Curia.

Read Leo XIII's wikipedia to understand what this guy believes (hint: more helping the poor, less lavishing praise on US CEOs): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Leo_XIII

This guy is a rebuke of MAGA and only an American could do it. It's an interesting moment in time.

Peruvians are white.
