New American Pope = US Lost its Power

Anonymous
There has never been an American Pope in part because the Catholic Church didn't want so much power consolidated within the US. Now that the US has really been knocked down with its international relations, currency, economy, leadership, etc., it's ok to have an American Pope. Just another data point as we track the downfall.

I am hardly a MAGA but all this does is cement the US further as a global leader? What are you even talking about?

No. It is largely understood that the US would never produce a pope until it was no longer the top power.

Too early to tell, but if he takes any of the core humanitarian stances of his predecessor, a showdown looms with Trump and U.S. foreign policy.

He spent most of his career in Peru and Rome, and he’s also a citizen of Peru.

It was a compromise to keep out the African pope after the Italian stumbled.

After I saw them do some shenanigans with birth certificates to get two more people a vote, I figured we would end up with a transgender pope.

This isn't Hollywood, this is real (extremely ritualized and privileged) life!

He is generally fairly progressive and has tweeted support for immigrants in the US and against White Supremacy.

He likely will not. He's more conservative:

Is that an actual thing or is it just what people said to rationalize why there hadn’t been one? There are *lots* of places that haven’t had a pope.

Exactly. And I don’t think this guy was elected pope by accident. He’s the anti Trump. It’s a great choice.

I take this, if anything, to be a kind of check on Trump in the US. I don't think it has anything to do with the US losing it's power.
