Why is it even on your radar to start?

I feel like there is one poster (maybe the same person?) who is always questioning why schools are on someone's radar. Isn't this a place to collect information/experiences? Does it matter why a school is on someone's radar????????

But to answer your question--we are NOVA family and DD is looking for a college that is akin to JMU but that will likely admit her and give her merit. She's at best a 3.25 GPA. We heard that Kansas State might fit the bill. If you have other suggestions, I am happy to hear them.

VCU
Alabama
LSU
Ole Miss
University of Iowa
Iowa State
University of Nebraska
University of Oregon
University of Kentucky
100+ others

How is KSU similar to JMU? I have never heard anyone include the two in the same sentence.

It's completely random to say I want a place like JMU and then pluck KSU out of the ether.

Both relatively large public universities with primary school color being purple.

I got news for you: you live in a MAGA country. Trump won, by a lot (and no, I didn’t vote for him).

Kansas really isn’t Maga central anymore than the rest of the US. Lawrence, KS (where KU is locate ) is very cute and KU has a nice reputation.

People are actually moving to “maga-central” and flyover countries places and liking it. The latest area to become trendy and have a real estate boom: Bentonville, AR. Yep, where WalMart has its headquarters and about 30 miles from Fayetteville (University of Arkansas). Young families (including many democratic ones) are flocking there. Google it and stop being a snob.

I had talked to my son about applying to the University of Arkansas. The conversation revolved around the fact that northwest Arkansas is booming because of Walmart, Tyson Foods and JB Hunt.

I work for Mizzou and have lots of friends who have worked/gone to school at KU (not as many K State). I am an east coast liberal former snob but is is really not that bad out here. My sister moved to TN and we compare how much more livable it is out here in the plains states. Once you get out of the blue bubble in Nashville, it is very Bible Belt and judgy. Here, even though KS/MO are still red states, people for the most part are more normal and down to earth. Lawrence is a very nice blue college town right near a vibrant blue city (KC). (Unfortunately I have not been to Manhattan KS.) Kansas even has a Dem governor. Kansas and Missouri allow for abortions up to viability; many southern states ban them. Compared to most of the SEC schools which everyone raves about on here- I would be less concerned about Kansas.

WalMart is building a new campus in Bentonville and attracting all sorts of talent to move there. It has a highly regarded art culture and museum, is an outdoor sports mecca (especially for mountain biking in which the city has invested in tons of public trails), and is close to the Ozarks. It has jobs jobs jobs, a slower pace of life and a relatively lower cost of living, very community and family oriented which people looking to start a family that find coastal states too expensive want.

If the only reason you are interested in KSU is merit aid for your kid, then pick 10 of these 90%+ acceptance flagships and apply and see where the dollars come out.

Then go visit a bunch and make a decision.

Merit is a critical factor for my B student who wants a big(er) school. Wouldn't mind a list of the so called 90%+ acceptance flagships. Everyone loves to list 'Bama but they don't give merit to mid students.

This. DH went to KSU, but mainly because he was from Kansas. It's fine, but so are many state universities elsewhere. People may be perplexed why your kid decided to go there from so far away.

You can pretty much get the same experience at VA Tech if you can be admitted.

How is this even relevant since clearly VA Tech would be considered if it was even a remote possibility. And what is wrong with spreading your wings to somewhere new ?

Arkansas
University of Oregon
KSU
University of Kansas
LSU
University of ND or SD (their tuition is nearly the same in state and OOS…they need students so dont play games)
Iowa State
Nebraska
University of Iowa
West Virginia

There are more…but there are 10 off the bat.

Sorry your kid didn't get in.

It's literally next to impossible to not get accepted...your CC has to get declined when you try to apply. You have to try a little harder with your trolling.

A high acceptance rate does not mean a university provides a poor education.

A response to trolling is not trolling.

Thank you! Then why is it so upsetting to some that I am on here collecting information about one of the listed schools--KSU!!!!

I currently live in Manhattan, KS. We moved here from Reston in 2020. It’s a small town in the middle of nowhere, but the college kids seem to really love it. The campus is really nice and the school has a lot of school spirit.

I would look specifically at majors that your student might select, and then see how it ranks in those areas.

I really didn’t want to move here, but I have to say that my teens absolutely love it.

If you have specific questions I’m happy to answer them for you.

PP again. I’m a democrat and fairly liberal and I’d say there’s a fair amount of liberals here. Especially on campus.

It isn’t, actually, they have a dem governor, voted to protect abortion, large swathes voted dem. Please read before your sh!t on places.

Op, I’ve been to both campuses (family lives in Kansas, some went to each school) and they are both worth considering.

I am a Democrat, and from Kansas, and have many Democrat and Independent-registered relatives still in the state. The PP is right and many of the other posters are obviously ignorant (and sound like as$holes in real life).

K-State is very good for agriculture studies and solid for engineering. Great school spirit. There’s definitely a Trump following and it’s where most ultraconservative parents hope their DC will wind up.

The University of Kansas in Lawrence (KU) is a much better school overall and worth a visit. More moderate-leaning student body. The town itself is blue.

Kansas was the first state to vote down an abortion ban solidly in 2022 after Trump’s Supreme Court “sent abortion back to the states.” Won’t pretend it’s not an ongoing battle though.

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly (D) is as good as they come. However, this is her last term.

I recommend KU over K-State,

Signed,
KU alum
