Fine for what? For you? Why would you want to encourage to walk less? If your goal is 5000 steps, fine. If mine is 10,000, encourage me to get there or STFU. Really weird post.

5,000 is basic daily movement. 10,000 will maintain your weight. 15,000 you can lose weight.

You don't know this. Everyone is different. Just stick to trying answering OP's question and stop trying to answer questions that weren't even asked.

Take some personal responsibility. No im not your cheerleader to get to your arbitrary number.

If I walk for a total of one hour that gets me near enough that the rest of my normal daily walking around the house will get over 10,000.

A one hour walk plus regular life walking will always, always get me over 10,000.

I agree with this. For those who think 6-8k steps is fine, I think it is for maintaining basic activity. I walk as a weight management strategy, so 10k is my minimum.

Under-desk treadmill changed my life! I love it so much, and I never sit at work any more. I now easily get at least 10k steps/day and some days up to 20k-30k. I walk slowly but consistently throughout the day.

One step at a time.

If you aren't moving enough to get 5,000 steps a day, you are sedentary. The pp was responding to the benefits of of 10,000+ daily steps. I get 13,000 by walking 4 miles each day, moving around as I go about my day and generally not sitting on my butt for more than 20 minutes at a time.

People! OP asked...how do you get 10,000 steps a day? How much clearer of a question do you need? The answers are crap like...you only need 5,000. You only need 8,000. I get 13,000. Who gives a crap. if you don't want to answer the OP's question, start a new thread of ... "In your opinion, what is the optimal number of steps a day for _______?" As to the posters who actually answered OP's question..., thank you.

The only way to get 10k is to add a run, walk or walks into your day. You won't get that many from a typical office job, driving everywhere and doing stuff around the house. If you have a job where you are on your feet and walking around a lot during the day or live in a city, you probably can. Otherwise you need to incorporate the exercise into your day. Parking further away, taking stairs, etc, will add some extra but not get you to 10k.
