I’m afraid it’s a bit more serious than that. Most of us are very specialized and even though there is always some movement in and out of private industry, there are not going to be hundreds/thousands of openings all at once. And certainly not all in DC. If I lost my job I have no ilusiones - my salary would be significantly reduced and I’d probably end up getting a law school friend to help me get hired doing doc review at their firm. I'm thinking along your lines, OP. Not a lawyer but in a specialized PhD field. I think we could get by on my spouse's much lower salary and savings for a year, and if I'm lucky I'll find something local at a 50% pay cut (fortunately I'm used to living very frugally). I'm trying to figure out how we'd get through job loss because I agree that none of us are safe, and also I want to be free to say no and walk away if I'm the one ASKED to do illegal things.

That said, I don't see how "worrying" helps, we can't stop them with worrying. And I still have to figure out logistics around RTO and extended hours of childcare while I have a job in the meanwhile. [/quote]
