Close or delay for cold?

We should start on time. There was melting yesterday evening and some melting today. Sure there will be a few slick spots for walkers, but they will be okay. Remind your kid to decide whether to walk on the sidewalk or on the grass depending on how the sidewalk looks. It’s manageable. Drivers will check their buses and the vast majority will start. We can all handle a variation from normal.

It’s the negative wind chills when they’re at the bus at 630 am or walking half a mile to school that’s the issue babe. It’s the combo of ice AND polar vortex . In no world are they on time with single digit temps and negative wind chills. Obvious delay. Gives them time to warm up buses and get to at least 10 degrees before tossing kids out there.

Ha! Very true.

I don’t mean to argue, but according to the latest weather advisory:
"Keep pets indoors as much as possible.
Make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter..."

So ensure pets and livestock stay protected indoors, yet kids are expected to walk to bus stops and schools.

Our local forecast has wind chills of -1° for tomorrow morning. That's really really cold.

Thanks, babe. We have been through this polar vortex cycle before. In the past, we have done a delay the first couple days and then go back to normal even though the temps are exactly the same, because everyone realized you can’t have a delay every single time it’s very cold. I’ve been through this cycle a lot in 25 years.

So... this would be the first day.

Right, but the point is, if most of the ice has melted and the temps aren’t going to change, why do a delay any day?

So, like I said… as tomorrow is the first day of extremely low temps, we agree tomorrow will be a delay.

A) gives the buses more time to start
B) 2 hours could be the difference between 5 and 10 degrees. Maybe not a huge difference but one that is worth factoring in some time to try to get to. There’s literally a hypothermia warning, I don’t know how you guys think they’re putting kids outside in that.

I’m planning to be at school educating my class. You are welcome to keep your kiddo at home until Friday, though.

My kids will be in their classes at school when it is open, not later, not earlier.

Most of the ice hasn’t melted on neighborhood roads and sidewalks where we live. In the Burke Suburbs. Main roads here are fine though.
