I hate youth and high school sports

DP - Where are these serious HS baseball players who don’t devote an ungodly amount of time to baseball in the off season? Which HS are you at?

You don't need to dedicate massive amounts of time to baseball. Not even pros practice year around.

The truth about baseball and other sports is that your genetics and god given traits determine how good you're going to be. Life would be much better for kids and parents if everyone just accepted that you can't work your way to being a D1 Athlete. Rudy was a Disney movie and not real life.

Agree.
My kid left HS team jr year due to politics and is currently playing D1 at an Ivy. Dropping HS allowed him to keep straight As and compete club at a higher level.

NP: our at (very large UMC public) school you’d be iced out if you didn’t participate in offseason workouts and play travel ball offseason. Only exception would be an outstanding pitcher, maybe. Zero varsity baseball players play a 2nd school sport.

However many friends have kids in smaller high schools or small private schools, and many of their kids play more than one seasonal sport.

I think it definitely depends on the sport.

It’s actually shocking that your large school doesn’t have a larger pool of genuinely talented athletes to pull from.

And that is the problem.

Coaches discovered that they can run unaffiliated clubs and strong arm parents into paying for it if they want their kids to make the team. Coaches are making thousands off travel clubs and training facilities by icing out players who can't or won't pay up. At lots of big schools it isn't about who is the best player but rather who is being a good little soldier and funding the coach's travel costs.

And there's always exceptions. If a 6'4 240 lbs kid showed up who can throw 90 and hit 400 ft then all bets are off. They wouldn't care if they played football, basketball, and simultaneously ran track during baseball. The first rule of sports is the rules aren't applied equally.

The majority of HS programs/coaches are complete crap.

This is a silly comment. Corona HS in CA is the #1 baseball team in the country and they have two kids that will be drafted in the 1st and 2nd round of the MLB. The other starting 7 are all D1.

Those kids work their asses off and play for the BPA travel team in the offseason.

What kids in any sport aren’t “working” and playing for a Power 4 D1?

BTW, Trevor Bauer who is also an MLB pitcher admitted he is a terrible athlete. He did a general workout for an MLB team and the person running the workout said his general athletic stats (running speed, vertical leap, etc) were about what a 50 year old rec player would produce.

I never understood the motivation behind Rudy.

He got beat up for years to play a few touches his last game.

My only quibble here is that Rudy actually was real life.

HS baseball in the DMV is a special kind of crazy. And, it’s going to get worse with the new NCAA D1 roster changes.

It’s actually nothing compared to GA, FL and CA.

I don’t know anything about Corona HS in CA, but is it your contention that they have such a phenomenal program in which the kids work so hard that the starting nine got so good due to said program and work ethic? In other words, were little Billy, Timmy, and crew just born to parents who happened to live in that HS zone and their coaches whipped them into D1 shape?

Or do parents of exceptional players decide at some point to move to the neighborhood? Does the high school do any (God forbid) recruiting?

My kid got sh@t on by coaches for years. And walked on a D1 program last year, eventually started and doing fantastic. Many develop later physically - 18/19 v 15/16. More played in the Final Four and D1 football were overlooked and not even drafted or transferred from D3 or unknown programs. More and more of the standout players hung in there and proved everyone wrong, including a starting NFL quarterback
