NP: our at (very large UMC public) school you’d be iced out if you didn’t participate in offseason workouts and play travel ball offseason. Only exception would be an outstanding pitcher, maybe. Zero varsity baseball players play a 2nd school sport. However many friends have kids in smaller high schools or small private schools, and many of their kids play more than one seasonal sport. I think it definitely depends on the sport.
And that is the problem. Coaches discovered that they can run unaffiliated clubs and strong arm parents into paying for it if they want their kids to make the team. Coaches are making thousands off travel clubs and training facilities by icing out players who can't or won't pay up. At lots of big schools it isn't about who is the best player but rather who is being a good little soldier and funding the coach's travel costs. And there's always exceptions. If a 6'4 240 lbs kid showed up who can throw 90 and hit 400 ft then all bets are off. They wouldn't care if they played football, basketball, and simultaneously ran track during baseball. The first rule of sports is the rules aren't applied equally.
