Golden Age Hollywood starlet Jennifer Jones made her first successful film in 1943, and the name’s popularity began to grow. But it wasn’t until 1970’s enormously well-received, if saccharine film Love Story featured the untimely death of a Jennifer, as played by Ali MacGraw, that the name vaulted to the top spot."

I'm a Jennifer from 1969, named as such because my mom loved Donovan's song Jennifer Juniper.

My friend has a grown son Chandler because of the show Friends.

My college roommate was named after Jennifer Juniper.

Linda--a movies and two hit songs in the post World War 2 era. Tons of women in their 70s named Linda. Almost none now.

Funny thing...the musician who wrote the first hit Linda, which was ubiquitous in its day--wrote it about his lawyer's toddler daughter Linda who apparently was little miss personality. That toddler was Linda Eastman who grew up and married Paul McCartney.

The celebrity might name their kid a certain thing because that name is on the rise. Often people think they are being edgy with a name choice only to find they were part of a trend.

That's so cool - I wish I could say it's me, but I commuted from home during college.

PP. She was a really cool girl. The song connection stayed with me all these years because of it.

It became popular in the early aughts due to Friends

Get over yourself ,love. It's laughable you think Jane Austen is peak sophistication.

Hardly. It's just been around for well, centuries. As has the name. Maybe you're just a moron and you don't read books.

Oh FFS. Yes, the name Emma has been around for centuries, but it's well documented that Rachel Green naming her baby Emma on Friends sparked its recent extreme popularity.

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/friends-baby-names-influence_l_60af115fe4b0d45b7532609a

"The episode aired in May 2002, and while we can’t say definitively how much it affected parents’ choices, it more than likely boosted Emma’s appeal. In 2001, the name ranked No. 13 on the SSA’s popularity list, but in 2002 it jumped up to the fourth most popular name for girls. In 2003, Emma was No. 2, and it’s been in the top three every year since."

Not pp but it was already on a steep upward trajectory.

I think a lot of these examples are backwards and the pop culture name came from a rising popularity name.

Often names are cyclical and the grandparents' and great grandparents' generations name start to feel fresh to the procreating generation.

+1 although there are exceptions (Splash -Madison, Love Story-Jennifer)

most of these are the shows/movies following the existing trends. I already knew a couple baby Emmas when the Friends baby was named. It had already had strong growth in popularity

You knowing a couple of people with the name prior doesn't change the fact that the name became widely popular due to Friends. Why do some of you have to be so insufferable?

I just don't buy it, no matter what the Huffington Post says. Why would someone name their kid what a character on a TV show named her kid at the very tail end of the show? Emma wasn't even a character.

I'm a Jennifer and I have heard this a million times, of course. Love Story did not cause the name's ascent. It came out in December of 1970. And yet Jennifer was the number one girl name for 1970. A lot of us, myself included, were named Jennifer in 1970 before the movie came out in December. And it was top 5 in 1968 and 1969.
