Emma- Friends

Addison- Grays Anatomy

Jayden &Willow- thanks to the SMiths

Brady- Tom Brady

Others

Sidney and Lindsay Greenbush were the twins playing Carrie on Little House. Born in 1970.
I hate both those names.

How did Lindsay (or Lindsey) get popular? Anyone know the zeitgeist on that one? Particularly hate that one. Reminds me of Linseed Oil.

Not sure. There was Lindsay Wagner, the Bionic Woman from the 70s.

Did Mabel ever catch on? It is adorable.

My cousin named her daughter Mabel, but not until the 2010s. Along with Mabel other old lady names had a moment like Pearl, Edith (maybe from Downton Abbey?), Hazel, Cora and Grace.

Tracy Ullman named her daughter Mabel in 1986.

I knew several male Lindsays and Sidneys and Leslies growing up.

Selena Gomez plays a Mabel on Only Murders in the Building. It's not my style, but I think it's a fashionable name today - in line with Violet, Sybil, Edith, etc. Mabel is a top 50 name in the UK.

But do you think it came from "Mad About You?" I think it was a bit before its time in 1997. And didn't know about Tracy Ullman. Thanks PP!

It became popular in the early aughts due to Friends

Get over yourself ,love. It's laughable you think Jane Austen is peak sophistication.

Hardly. It's just been around for well, centuries. As has the name. Maybe you're just a moron and you don't read books.

Oh FFS. Yes, the name Emma has been around for centuries, but it's well documented that Rachel Green naming her baby Emma on Friends sparked its recent extreme popularity.

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/friends-baby-names-influence_l_60af115fe4b0d45b7532609a

"The episode aired in May 2002, and while we can’t say definitively how much it affected parents’ choices, it more than likely boosted Emma’s appeal. In 2001, the name ranked No. 13 on the SSA’s popularity list, but in 2002 it jumped up to the fourth most popular name for girls. In 2003, Emma was No. 2, and it’s been in the top three every year since."

Not pp but it was already on a steep upward trajectory.

I think a lot of these examples are backwards and the pop culture name came from a rising popularity name.

Often names are cyclical and the grandparents' and great grandparents' generations name start to feel fresh to the procreating generation.

+1 although there are exceptions (Splash -Madison, Love Story-Jennifer)

most of these are the shows/movies following the existing trends. I already knew a couple baby Emmas when the Friends baby was named. It had already had strong growth in popularity

You knowing a couple of people with the name prior doesn't change the fact that the name became widely popular due to Friends. Why do some of you have to be so insufferable?

I just don't buy it, no matter what the Huffington Post says. Why would someone name their kid what a character on a TV show named her kid at the very tail end of the show? Emma wasn't even a character.

It happens all the time pp, it's why we have kids named Addison, Hermione. Danaerys etc. Maybe you wouldn't e inspired to name your kid in such fashion but people take inspiration from their baby's names from all sorts of places

I knew a kid name Anniken. I can’t take that name seriously.

Especially since it’s supposed to be spelled Anakin.

I was named after this character but from the book, released in 1977, since I was born pre-83. NO ONE names their daughters this anymore and it has taken on a Karen-like negative connotation.

It makes me wonder: why no surge in “Rose” after Titanic?

There were a few Roses I can think of after Titantic, but I think it was much more common as a go-to middle name (waves in MN Anne with a sister whose MN is Marie)
