"Ms. Rosenkrantz says Jennifer started as an obscure take on Guinevere that was rarely used before the mid-’50s. Golden Age Hollywood starlet Jennifer Jones made her first successful film in 1943, and the name’s popularity began to grow. But it wasn’t until 1970’s enormously well-received, if saccharine film Love Story featured the untimely death of a Jennifer, as played by Ali MacGraw, that the name vaulted to the top spot."
I'm a Jennifer and I have heard this a million times, of course. Love Story did not cause the name's ascent. It came out in December of 1970. And yet Jennifer was the number one girl name for 1970. A lot of us, myself included, were named Jennifer in 1970 before the movie came out in December. And it was top 5 in 1968 and 1969.
