Yes, crazy. That is about the cost of a full year at other instate schools.

Tuition + Room/Board/Books/Fees
Engineering 1st Year
Virginian 49,874
Non-Virginian 89,018 to 90,378

Engineering 2nd, 3rd Year
Virginian: 50,936
Non-Virginian: 90,080 to 91,440

Engineering Tuition 4th Year
Virginian: 49,876
Non-Virginian: 89,014 to 90,374

So that's all-in, not tuition.

other than books, all in cost is what I would consider to be the cost

Wonder how many pages this can go arguing over easily accessible public information.

10 or more pages is possible. This is DCUM, after all.

Good point. So just because I am going to argue with you and call you a short-sighted unmotivated quitter for not having the vision that this could easily go 30 pages.

Not ridiculous. Your other options are OOS at publics like UCLA (76k+) and Berkekey at ($78+). Privates like USC are over $90k a year. Don't like it? Go to the community college and take advantage of the guaranteed transfer program.

UVA already is discounting in-state costs (engineering is an expensive program!). College is a luxury, it is not a promise to your kid. Have them work for a gap year if need be.

But stop haranguing in this point. Clearly you have a sour grapes issue with UVA engineering because you keep raising this bizarre fact.

And for non-engineering types (the vast majority), UVA's COA for its most popular College of Arts & Sciences, all in, is only $40k ... still an extraordinary benefit when compared to OOS and private tuitions

The original OP here.

Your comment is really condescending and unwarranted. You don't know me or my kid. UVA could be a reach or a safety school for my kid. I could afford a full price tag of USC or I need a 100% financial assistance even for a community college. You don't get to lecture me how I, or other DCUMers, plan for kid's college.

I am just stating a fact that the In-state cost (tuition+ all others) of UVA is WAY higher than the In-state cost of other flagship state universities. There is no point to compare it to the OOS of other universities. Even so, you will find it is actually very close to the OOS costs of Georgia Tech or NCSU. For a public university, the In-state cost should be more affordable for the state taxpayers.

It is really hard to understand where your condescending attitude come from.

Well stated. The op is the same poster who harps about the cost (which I find reasonable, btw) in other threads. My hunch is her/his own kid did not get in.

My kid is at UVA and we’ve spent a fraction of what the school provides as estimates for books, materials, equipment and personal expenses saving us thousands p/year. Also saving on housing and food living off campus.

Why would out of state attend UVA at that pricetag, when they could attend a school like MIT, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Stanford, etc for almost the same cost?

Except you have to go to college in wonderful places like Binghamton.

If a 20 yo can’t have fun in a boring town w 10,000 other 20 year olds, then they’re not doing youth right

We barely left campus at my school. The occasional movie, meal or mall trip. But almost all action was on campus.

If it makes you feel any better, your northern Virginia, high performing student is not lukely to get into UVA.

Can we stop with the bolded please? It's really unnecessary, and I say that as a graduate with two kids there. You are merely contributing fodder to the ridiculous "UVA Booster" narrative that is so pervasive here. Stop.

Yes, the harangue is getting old. Just the fact OP titles this post "UVA Cost" (not engineering cost) shows they are stirring the pot. Non-engineering programs at UVA are only $40k

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.

My DS is currently in UVA business as a junior, and we're paying as much as engineering, if not a bit more:

School of Commerce, Third- and Fourth-Year

Virginian Non-Virginian
Tuition 27,570 66,130
Fees 3,716 4,398
Subtotal 31,286
70,528

Additional Categories 21,134 21,134 to 22,494
Total 52,420 91,662 to 93,022

I actually think the premiums for engineering and business are warranted given higher costs and higher expected earnings for those majors. Many schools have gutted other departments to subsidize majors like engineering.
