At age 9, we consulted a urologist, and she suggested we try a bed wetting alarm (the kind you but in the pull-up). We’d tried a lot of things before that (limiting liquid after dinner, night wake-ups, a regular alarm—she was desperate to stop wetting at night). Bed wetting runs on both sides of the family, so our pediatrician was not very concerned about her outgrowing it. The alarm worked within a few weeks.
FWIW, dd day and nap trained super easily at age 2.5. She also only urinated about every 6 hours during the day. It tuns out she had a ureteral reflux condition. One of the side effects is bed wetting. This only affects about 5% of kids, but it’s something to be aware of. |
| Does he seem to mind wearing a pull-up at bedtime? Will he tell you in the morning if he’s dry or not? |
| One of my kids wet the bed every night until 6.5yo when we tried the bed wetting alarm. The pediatrician suggested it and said it works for some. Pediatrician was not worried, just said some have success with it. Something about the alarm helping link the brain up with the feeling of having to pee. I was shocked how fast it worked. A week! It was a tough week because my kid did not even wake up for the alarm—it woke me up, then I woke kid up. Lots of cleaning. Anyway, it’s worth a try. Good luck. |
| Bed wetting alarm works great, our ped said to wait until after 7. |
| At that age it’s more important that they get enough sleep during the night. I would just utilize the pull-ups until they outgrow it on their own. |
Have the same issue with my 6 year old. We never tried limited water or waking her up at midnight. In my case I am pretty sure its genetics because I was between 8-9 when I stopped doing it weekly, I would've accidents till I was 11ish. I guess she will wear pull-ups till then. |
| I feel y’all’s pain. My 9 year old still wets every night and will wet if he falls asleep in the car. My 7 year old night trained at 3 and my 5 year old wets about 3 nights a week. We use diapers with booster pad for the 5 and 9 year old. Without the booster pad my 9 year old will oversaturate the diaper and it will leak. |
Have you looked into a medical reason? Kind of unusual that your 9 year old is having accidents so frequently. |
Lots of 9 year olds wet the bed every night, but I agree the wetting even during a nap is not as common. Our pediatrician thought it was just that he is a very deep sleeper even for naps but we did have some tests run at a pediatric urologist and everything came back normal. |
| My 8.5 yo DS is still wet every night...pediatrician says normal and will grow out of it eventually. |
| Up to 7 is common. After 7 is not “normal” whatever that is supposed to mean. |
Not true at all. |

My DS wet the bed until 10. When he turned 10, it was like a switch went off and his body was ready. I was relieved. We did pull-ups nightly and had special washable and disposable pee pads that were placed on top of the sheets so we wouldn’t have to change sheets daily.
We had previously tried waking up at midnight and limiting liquids but that never worked. We didn’t bother with the alarm. |
If he had a pull-up then you shouldn’t have had to put down anything else. Was he peeing so much that the pull-up couldn’t hold up? |
| It takes patience, time, positive encouragement, and dedication to train your kid to use the “potty” and then the toilet by 3y. |
