Cannot night train 6 year old

Anonymous
Potty training was stressful for me. My daughter didn’t stop pooping in her pants until 4. She is 5 years, 11 months and sleeps through the night in panties and gets herself up out of her sleep to use the bathroom. No accidents in the past 5 months.

My point is these kids will reach these milestones when they are ready. Stressing and forcing it won’t help.

Have you had any problems with skin irritation or rashes?

Do you use any powder or lotion when you are getting them ready for bedtime?

My son has bad reactions to the blue dye in pull-ups. So we've never been able to use pull-ups at night.

Anyone know of any more 'plain' pull ups that work well at night?

Hi not sure if for me I'm the PP who uses diapers with my 8 year old, as the fit is better it avoids any rubbing or irritation, it wasn't one of our issues with the pull ups though

Dollar generals brand works well for us, They're mostly plain white.

If it’s leaking every night you should try something else. You might have better success with just a regular diaper that you can adjust the tapes to fit. They make a size 7 now that can accommodate bigger kids.

We've done this with my 8 year old, they're the only thing that has worked, we've tried every other product but could only avoid leaks with diapers for now.

My daughter is almost 8 and wears a pull up to bed. Yes, they do leak sometimes, I don't see her actually agreeing to wear a diaper let alone fit in one. Even with her being small for her age, I don't see them fitting. Do you get the adult ones?

It took a couple of nights for her to get used to it, but the size 8s still fit well for us. When we didn't have a leak she was okay with it and it's been the routine for 2 years. We try pull ups on occasion but she's not really got a size that fits well at the moment. When she does we'll move over, probably in a few months

She is able to manage them and put them on by herself I assume, correct?

No myself or DH put them on her still once she's finished in the bath. She doesn't mind it at the moment but if there was challenge from her then we'd go back and try the pull ups. She's the oldest child so enjoys the extra bedtime attention and much prefers not waking up in damp bedding as happened before.

Put them on her? Not like a baby right? How long after bath is her bedtime?

No, not like a baby. She has to lay on her bed to put them on but it's a quick process and then she gets ready herself. She found them uncomfortableputting them on herself, but also said it was as uncomfortable having to wake up to wet bedding. It's about 30 mins before bedtime, we read before bed and then it's lights out. She never needed the toilet before bed in her pull up. If she asked to go at all again, we'd probably risk the leaks we had previously.

I would still encourage her to try to go potty right before she gets into bed. How is she during the day? Has she had sleepovers yet?

She has to go before we put the diaper on. She's mostly fine in the day. She does still struggle to hold for a while so there is the odd accident in the car for example. We bring spare clothes for those to make it easy to sort out. We've been through a few paediatrician visits and they think she has overactive bladder so we expect these. It will improve with age, but essentially her bladder isn't quire as mature as expected for an 8 year old.

We haven't done sleepovers yet. If we do I will speak to the parents. We will probably limit drinks and use pull ups as that should mean we don't have the problems we have currently.

I would still make her try to go right before she gets into bed. 30 minutes may not seem like a lot but I would still have her try to go. I would also have her take on as much responsibility as a big girl getting ready for bed. Does she get up and go first thing in the morning?

I make sure my daughter goes before any car ride. It's a good 40 minutes to the nearest Walmart here. It's been a while since she had an accident in the car. I believe the last time was that we were on a dead stop on the highway. Can she or has she asked to wear something when in the care depending how long the car ride is?

Me personally, I would hold off on sleepovers until she stops to avoid any embarrassment.

She does go in the morning it's not laziness. She wakes up soaked so I don't think 30 minutes will make a difference. She has full responsibility for her bed routine, she still enjoys reading together and we wont stop that if she wants it. and she can't put it on comfortably.

We make her go before ever leaving the house, but the grocery store we like is a similar distance, and there's not good places to stop. She's not suggested and I've not offered. They're only a couple of times a month, which for all the trips out is manageable.

I want her to do sleepovers soon, but agree it could be embarrassing for her.

Do you mean she takes it off to go potty in the morning? My daughter takes her pull up off as soon as she gets out of bed and lets me know if her sheets need to be changed. We limit her drinks before bed so I don't know how in the world she can go that much at night because her pull up is completely full in the morning. She is a very heavy sleeper, and I am shocked that she can sleep through that and not wake up.

Our rule here is that my daughter takes off her pull up as soon as she wakes up AND throws it in the garbage. For the longest time she would take them off and just leave them lying around on the bathroom or bedroom floor.
I have since gotten a small garbage pail with a lid for her to put them in. Not to mention that they do cause her room to smell so the garbage helped with that as well.
She also needs to tell me if her pull up leaked so I can help her change the sheets. She never used to tell me before and I would have to check every morning. At 7, she is old enough to tell me and help with her sheets and stuff.
