I went to NYU twenty years ago. It was surprising how many local Tristate kids attended the school. Huge numbers. The few frats/sororities at NYU were dominated by kids from Long Island and northern NJ, And no, they were not commuting. Local kids lived in the dorms even if their family home was in Queens, Jersey City, Yonkers, Westchester, etc. |
Know the Stuy valedictorian from a few years ago. Extremely well-rounded, super-engaged, mega-bright kid. Comes from an affluent, but not "Ivy development case" family. Rejected Harvard. |
Kids who qualify for FA may end up at an Ivy if admitted. Kids with parents in middle class jobs - high enough for no aid, but not high enough to cover full pay costs (especially if younger siblings) - often end up in the SUNYs or next tier down providing sufficient merit. |
Hmm. HM has a total school enrollment of nearly 1800. Do they really have 1200 students in the HS? |
|
I went to Bronx Science which is ranked second to Stuy for specialized HS. A lot of kids who didn't go to HYP or other top tier colleges ended up going to state schools like Binghamton, Stony Brook or Geneseo, or CUNY honors which was a great deal back then as it was free.
I'm sure Stuy sends at least a decent number of kids to these schools as well. It is super competitive to get into top ranked universities from the large specialized HS because there is so much competiton. They don't want to accept dozens of students from the same school. |
Sure, n=1. They probably went on to one of the other dozen T20 schools where they were admitted, likely with a full ride. But the facts bear out that compared to 30 years ago, the Stuy's and TJs are sending less kids to the Ivy League. Probably in spite of having even smarter kids these days. And that's because international students are starting to majorly crowd-out domestic students from public schools. I'd love to see some legislation on this issue from our federal government. |
What kind of legislation? Keep out international students from our private colleges??? |
|
Stuy still sends plenty to Harvard every year. I could dig up the list from last year when I have a minute, but this year is looking stronger.
not sure what instagram you're looking at, probably stuygrads2024. go over to stuyseniorcaucus and see videos for more. they'll be released over the next couple of weeks. (my dd is in one of these!) |
The only legislation I want to see is a law that grants these international students a provisional greencard. The percentage of international students at harvard has doubled from 8% to 16% over the past 30 years. international students are not crowding out domestic students by a whole lot. Stuy and Tj aren't sending as many kids to college because the pool of applicants used to be 100% of Tj students plus maybe 30% of students from other schools. Now its closer to 80% so some of those kids are getting spots at the top schools too. They are dealing with a wave of domestic competition. |
| It seems like no one there wants to attend Virginia publics universities |
Honestly aside from UVA, W&M and VT, none of the Virginia publics have a national draw. UVA out of state tuition is as high as any private school without nearly as much financial aid. |
I went to a NYC private and about 5 kids from my class ended up transferring to NYU because they didn't like being away from NYC. Just happened to my DD's friend at Colgate. |
And most of them (~90% of Asian students) are Chinese Americans whereas Asian students at TJ is almost all Indian Americans. |
Unless things have changed (and they probably have) 90% sounds very high. More than 10% of the asians in the 1980s were probably south asians There was also a significant korean population. |
How many TJ kids are attending a CUNY or SUNY? |
