Balanced by the cost keeps a lot of kids from signing up.
Lately they have been struggling to get players and e-mailing coaches after tryouts.
Doesn't help that they sign up two teams when they had a total of about 21 players for 9v9. They could have just dropped to one team and not sent out requests for more players.

I see the list of clubs participating in the FPYC tournament on their website but I don’t see Valor’s list of participating clubs. Does anyone know which clubs are participating in Sombrero Tournament?

Every local rec soccer org is on the fpyc list already. Why do they even have 2 tournaments right in the same location the same weekend. Makes no sense.

Herndon Cup is the definitive fall all star tournament. The spring all star tournaments are not as defined. So valor is throwing their Sombrero in the ring to claim the title of best spring all star tournament. Not off to a good start though.

FPYC tournament has been around so long that my DH played in it as a kid.

Maybe Valor had beef with someone at FPYC and tried to invade their tournament turf, but FPYC has been THE spring tournament forever.

My kids play for FPYC. The coaches always just asked a few kids to join the team towards the end of the regular season. They had practices only after the regular season ended. It wasnt quite as severe as a poster upthread about it being a popularity contest, kids are chosen on ability, but it’s a very subjective look and no tryouts. The kids who dont get asked just dont know about it happening.

This is how BRYC does it as well - the coach’s kid is on the team and each coach picks a couple of their best players (and ALWAYS their own kid) to play on the All Star team. Then they have a few practices after the regular season. It’s very haphazard and the kids barely know their teammates names at the tournament.
Anyways, I do think the FPYC tourney is the better option.

100%! These coach coordinators always pick their own kid even when the DC talent level is in the bottom part of their team compared to the rest of the kids. It’s easy to spot a coaches DC in all star games. It’s the one that struggles the whole game. Lol

Sorry to hear that BRYC does this too. It’s probably universal in the rec world. I know some people got offended when a PP mentioned that rec tournaments are meaningless. They are not inherently meaningless. They are just made that way by over zealous soccer dad coaches.

Rec leagues ftmp are run on volunteer work If you have ideas to improve a league, you should volunteer. If you think all star teams should have tryouts, you could offer to organize and run them all. Or you could be an age group volunteer and set things up how you think is fair.

There is something very wrong with how these coaches and coordinators game the system for all stars and team rosters. And you think it’s easy to volunteer for a coordinator spot??? Those positions are taken waaaay in advance usually by someone specifically looking to game the system for their team. Rec basketball has a draft. Rec soccer you are at the mercy of a coordinator.

are you saying with a strait face that you called up your local rec soccer league and asked to volunteer--run an age group, run the all star program tryouts, etc--and they told you "No thanks, we have plenty of volunteers".

Huh? Loudoun had a huge turnout this year for all star tryouts. 2014 and 2013 boys had over 60 kids each trying out. They were not in need of any additional players to form teams.
