Loudoun does tryouts midseason. They have four practices. The cost is about the same as the rec season. They sell it as a good deal, 5for about 15 hours of training. To get to 15 they include the tournament matches and the allstar tryouts.
Well that makes sense as to why they always do well in the all star tournaments. It’s much more haphazard for other leagues. Not sure why they don’t all do it this way.
That is wild! Your rec league is way more advanced than mine! My kids play for FPYC. The coaches always just asked a few kids to join the team towards the end of the regular season. They had practices only after the regular season ended. It wasnt quite as severe as a poster upthread about it being a popularity contest, kids are chosen on ability, but it’s a very subjective look and no tryouts. The kids who dont get asked just dont know about it happening.
This is how BRYC does it as well - the coach’s kid is on the team and each coach picks a couple of their best players (and ALWAYS their own kid) to play on the All Star team. Then they have a few practices after the regular season. It’s very haphazard and the kids barely know their teammates names at the tournament. Anyways, I do think the FPYC tourney is the better option.
