Snow day predictions? Anyone

(Granted, moving online is essentially canceling, since teachers aren't prepared for a sudden switch to online teaching and half the kids won't log in. But the substantive difference is that it doesn't require using a snowday or doing a makeup.).

Our principal’s weekly message said this:

Our two built-in inclement weather days will be used BEFORE MCPS switches to virtual instruction code purple days.
Code Purple would only be announced if the impacting event is PREDICTABLE and part of a multi-day scenario.
Code Purple would be announced by noon the day prior.
Synchronous instruction will begin 2 HOURS LATER than the traditional bell schedule.

Your principal was so much more helpful than mine! Thank you!

Mcps teacher and will add to the principal’s message: code purple would have to be announced by noon on the INSTRUCTIONAL day prior, ie not on a Sunday.
Remember, every student and teacher would need to know in advance to take their devices home with them.

So it's not happening for Tuesday.

Take what you think MIGHT be reasonable and then take it to the next step - if you think a delay might be reasonable then it will likely be a full closure. -Fellow former Bostonian

Yeah. I grew up in Upstate New York and it basically had to snow a foot overnight for us to close. Here it's totally different, between road treatment budgets and the number of snowplows around.

They cancelled half the day for rain. Up county will get more snow and ice. No school Tuesday.

No school Tuesday. Maybe a hard freeze Tuesday night with wind chills below 10 degrees for Wednesday. So, maybe a delay there.

Friday??? Maybe another delay or day off. Depends on timing.

I just got a Weather Channel alert that it’s expected to be snowing thru 7 am Tues so: no school.

FWIW, we recently got a message from our school asking if we needed a Chromebook for “Code Purple” days (why MCPS needs more colors than Homeland Security is a whole other issue).

We said yes, but they have not delivered. So my guess is that they are nowhere near prepared to execute this kind of thing.

My kids are desperately hoping for a snow day tomorrow. I hope school is closed tomorrow as we don’t get snow very often

More color codes than Homeland Security, lol, love it.

At minimum two-hour delay but most likely closure.

There's a Winter Weather Advisory through 7 AM. Probably closure.

The turn around time for receiving a Chromebook for home use is a few weeks (at least at our school). The Chromebooks they are sending home are the older versions (so no touch screen and prone to problems which cause families to return them to school). Additionally, there aren't enough chargers to send home with the Chromebooks. Good luck getting a Chromebook for your child!

3-5 inches of snow now expected. Guarantee there is no school. Will not have virtual instruction unless staff and students are given advanced notice

Lucky for you and your kids, it doesn't take actual snow to get snow days here in MCPS!
