Snow day predictions? Anyone

(Granted, moving online is essentially canceling, since teachers aren't prepared for a sudden switch to online teaching and half the kids won't log in. But the substantive difference is that it doesn't require using a snowday or doing a makeup.).

I just pulled up our principal's note on this and it says for 'extended' weather events. So perhaps not for this week. (Phew.)

Our principal’s weekly message said this:

Our two built-in inclement weather days will be used BEFORE MCPS switches to virtual instruction code purple days.
Code Purple would only be announced if the impacting event is PREDICTABLE and part of a multi-day scenario.
Code Purple would be announced by noon the day prior.
Synchronous instruction will begin 2 HOURS LATER than the traditional bell schedule.

Your principal was so much more helpful than mine! Thank you!

Mcps teacher and will add to the principal’s message: code purple would have to be announced by noon on the INSTRUCTIONAL day prior, ie not on a Sunday.
Remember, every student and teacher would need to know in advance to take their devices home with them.

Agree. They should have school on a delay.

But also expecting a full day (or two) of no school after the ridiculous rain closure last week.

So tired of being still complaining about last week. It wasn’t a closure first of all. It was an early release and every other nearby county did the same thing. Get over it. Everyone would have complained if a bus had been stuck in the water or if buses had been delayed due to traffic conditions. When it comes to your own children, you’d hope parents would rather be safe than sorry but apparently, not in MoCo.

So it's not happening for Tuesday.

I thought they were no longer canceling, but rather moving online?

My kid's middle school does not allow them to take Chromebooks home. So they'd need to know in advance to have all kids take their computers and chargers home and have a contingency plan for kids who were absent the day that Chromebooks went home. And I think the teachers' union has some rule about needing time to convert lesson plans to online. So switching to online learning is going to be pretty rare: something like a blizzard that they can see coming a week in advance.

Agree. I’m not even hesitant about my prediction. There won’t be school tomorrow.

If they plow and treat on Tuesday, they won't need the delay on Wednesday, but it might depend on when it stops snowing on Tuesday and if they decide to wait for that before plowing and treating.

Snow is supposed to end by 2 am. I’ll let they announce a delay tonight and they reevaluate in the morning and potentially close if they can’t get everything plowed up-county. Delay minimum, possible closure (maybe even closure likely). I think school opens on time on Wed.

+1. But they’ll be back Wednesday. And likely off again Friday.
