Musk is a moron, but the suicide risk for non oral hormonal birth control is actually true, per a Denmark study. I’ve known a lot of women who had to stop depo-provera because of the affects on their mental health.

I also agree with the Denmark study that more studies are needed.

Bullcrap.

Dismissing the data, instead of talking about it, isn’t going to be doing anyone any favors.

Have you taken birth control before? You should understand that they can cause things like depression and mood disturbances for some women. Switching birth control is the best way to alleviate these problems.

Yes I have. I was on the pill for 20 years, and on a Mirena IUD for another 5.

Which meant I had a great sex life and only the exact number of babies I wanted.

I know of zero women my age who stopped the pill because of depression. We are in our 60s and saw the terrible affect of too many children on our mothers. They got married too early just to have sex then git trapped with no careers and too many children.

I see women on thus board pushing this garbage that hormonal birth control is dangerous, and it is ludicrous.

Fill in the gaps for yourself on how some will advocate trying to address that.

I don’t think they’ll be able to pull it off. They will go the way of the Polish right wing soon enough.

But there’s a chance, a small one, that they do pull it off. And then it will be: under his eye.

I get the return to the home narrative that Christian fundamentalists have. But from an economic perspective….Women are 50% of management in this country. How would we be able to compete economically without them. Our economy would have to significantly shrink. They’re just aren’t enough men.

I guess if everyone goes back to having 6 kids there would be? That’s a pretty big gamble though. I also think women they have more tools like technology that women in pre-birth control America did not have. We are much more savvy about tracking our cycles and probably could still have smaller families even without birth control. So I just don’t see this return to 6-8 kid families becoming the norm.

I’ve been concerned about this for sometime too. I’m liberal, but I follow a lot of holistic medicine people and I really don’t like this narrative. First there have been improvements to lower hormones in birth control, and still make it very effective. Especially things like either non-hormonal IUDs or IUDs with progesterone only have much less of an impact on many women in terms of sex drive, depression, other side effects etc.

On the flipside, what these people never talk about is that unplanned pregnancies also cause a lot of depression, lower your sex drive, and cause a lot of side effects. My ability to control the size of my family has impacted every aspect of my health and my life and if the trade-off is small dose of hormones, I will choose it every time.

I also took it for decades. I had to switch because one made me feel like I was losing my mind.

Dismissing these side effects, instead of telling women how to fix them, is both stupid and dangerous. Refusing to talk about it will only help the crazy people who want to talk women out of taking birth control.

I facilitated getting my teen on birth control, but I was also honest with her about side effects. Hiding information because you think it makes women have too many babies is absolutely ridiculous.

OK, drama lama.

You know what has a crap ton of side effects? A pregnancy!

They want to turn to an isolationist agenda instead of the global-nationalist companies we have that operate around the world. They want to cede authoritarianism to China and Russia and let them take over those other places. Easy way to shrink our economy is to have an "America First" economy that stops at our shores. It is exactly what Putin wants. Just wait, after he takes Ukraine, he will as the ruling GOP for Alaska back and they will be happy to give it to them. Another way of shrinking our economy, LOL.

Medications all have side effects. You know this going in.

My daughter has horrible cramps and we have tried 2 types of non-oral contraceptives for her that haven’t worked out for her for various reasons. We’re on to option #3 now. The only reason she isn’t on oral contraceptives is because I don’t believe she would take them reliably.

Once Roe was overturned, many of us warned this was next. Should I start the “told ya so” dance now?

This has already happened. https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2022/09/inside-anti-abortion-groups-campaign-to-sell-women-on-unreliable-birth-control-alternatives/

I don’t think it’s any surprise that birth control has side effects, so some of it works fine for some women, some of it works fine for other women, and some women can’t seem to tolerate any of it at all. For most women, there’s a form or a formula of one type that will work for them, or at least the benefits outweigh the negative side effects.

What the GOP wants to do is get rid of birth control. This is one of their avenues of attack.

I think all women should be aware of the relationship between cervical mucus, nasal temperature and fertility. I think knowing more about our bodies is a positive. I also think women should be able to access any form of birth control that works for them.

DP Hormonal birth control can also RESOLVE things like depression and mood swings, along with a lot of other issues.

I used to get horrible pre-menstrual blues the week before. And then horrible cramps and horrible big clotty periods along with horrible GI symptoms. Thank god for the pill, it helped all of those things.

There are a lot of meds that have side effects that some people can't tolerate. That's why doctors talk to patients about them when prescribing them so that the patient can be alert to any that show up.

It doesn't mean we ban those medications.

Throwing this article onto the pile here. The wording in Comstock is vague and could easily apply to the birth control pill if it applies to the abortion pill.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/17/us/politics/trump-allies-abortion-restrictions.html

“Behind the scenes, specific anti-abortion plans being proposed by Mr. Trump’s allies are sweeping and legally sophisticated. Some of their proposals would rely on enforcing the Comstock Act, a long-dormant law from 1873, to criminalize the shipping of any materials used in an abortion — including abortion pills, which account for the majority of abortions in America.

“We don’t need a federal ban when we have Comstock on the books,” said Jonathan F. Mitchell, the legal force behind a 2021 Texas law that found a way to effectively ban abortion in the state before Roe v. Wade was overturned. “There’s a smorgasbord of options.”

+1 And we’re back a dozen years ago to Sandra Fluke’s Congressional testimony. Hormonal birth control, while having side effects, has a myriad of benefits having nothing to do with preventing pregnancy and all those patients will have a terrible time.

Wtf? I never said it should be banned. I said it can increase the risk of suicide, and more studies and more discussion are both warranted. Generally, switching formulations or types is all that is needed to deal with side effects. Dismissing the data is stupid and dangerous.

Many, many doctors do a crap job of dealing with any issues related to women’s health, hence the call for more studies and more discussion. Mail order birth control is widely available and is used by young and uninsured women. They’re not getting any real advice from a doctor.

I’m aware. I’ve been pregnant quite a few times.

Still, calling a study “bull crap” is dumb. Is there nothing between making it illegal and making more information available to women who might be taking it?

You are buying into their narrative, planting doubt.

Stop it.

We all know drugs have side effects.
