You don't even know the stats of OP's kid. There are plenty of students who do not get accepted to JMU. I'm worried about my own this year.

3.3-3.4 gets you into JMU from FCPS.

It didn't get my DC in. Maybe stop generalizing?
DP

It's based on the Naviance scattergrams. It's an odd case when someone with a 3.4 from FCPS does not get into JMU. I'm sure that doesn't make you feel better. But, it's statistically true.

It’s also BS. The average GPA according to SCHEV is 3.9

That makes perfect sense. The average GPA would have to be ABOVE the "cut line" on Naviance! You can argue with it all you want, but Naviance shows a dividing line (not literally a line that they create, but one that you can see by looking at the chart) -- the vast, vast majority of those those who apply with a 3.3-3.4 GPA get in.

The average GPA for GMU is quite high too. But, if you have a 3.0-3.1, you are very very very likely getting into GMU. Yes, we know, you know a kid somewhere who had a 3.4 who didn't get it. There are a FEW (very few) exceptions. But, looking at the data -- an applicant with a 3.0-3.1 or higher is going to get into GMU.

you are an idiot. the 75th percentile for GPA last year was a 4.0. the ; 75th percentile was a 3.75 and the bottom 25th percentile was a 3.45. https://research.schev.edu//enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp

DP: Yes, but it's a big enough school where there are a lot of kids still in the 0-25th percentile. You can look at the GPA distribution on the CDS. The acceptance rate is 90%. If you have a 3.0 you have a very strong chance of getting in.

No, you don't. And the bottom 25th percentile is usually reserved for the hooked kids.

That's only at selective schools--the bottom 25th percent of a school that accepts 90% of its applicants are just the bottom 25th percent of applicants. I think GMU is a great school and I think it's a very good thing that there is an excellent state school that you have a very good chance (not certain) with a 3.0.

not when schev reports the bottom 25th percent of the class has a 4.20

At GMU? No way.

GMU's 75th/mid/25th is 4.0 / 3.75 / 3.45

I -quite literally- only know 1 kid who did not get accepted last year. And even that kid's parents weren't surprised. Some kids who did, with their grades and "resume", it was pretty shocking as the narrative that I'd heard was that JMU was being more selective.

That's not to say it's not a great school and a lot of fun. That describes my own non-elite college. But, the odds are in your favor.

I'm a JMU alum. More than 7 out of 10 applicants sre accepted. Been on common app for 1-2 years now. Previously regional but now newly designated R2 research university. 80% of undergraduates are from Virginia. Back up for UVA, WM and Tech engineering applicants seeking an instate option. Loves it sports! It is, what it is. Go Dukes!

Oh lord. Stupidity raises its hand again.

I don't know what you think you are reading... but if you have a 3.0-3.1, you are almost certain to get into GMU. There are a few outliers. But not many. 3.0-3.1 gets you in. If you are in CEC, you aren't going to stay long if you started with a hs 3.0. But they will let you in.

JMU used to be WAY more selective. Only a 35% acceptance rate back in the early 1990s...though the school was much smaller as well.

Somehow this narrative continues to survive that it is now more selective, when that is far from the truth.

JMU never, ever accepted only 35 percent of its applicants, ever.

Dude...a very simple google search proves you immediately wrong. Are you that lazy? It was actually only 31% back in 1987/88.

It is painful to respond to this stupidity.

If your gpa is 3.0, you are getting into GMU unless there is something really odd happening. I'm not dissing GMU. My hs junior who got a 1440 (98th%) on the PSAT is planning to go there. But facts are facts. A 3.0-3.1 is tbe "cut line" for GMU. There may be a few odd exceptions, but they are not the rule.

Similarly, at JMU, a 3.3-3.4 gets you in (with a few rare exceptions).

DP. What many of us are trying to tell you is that this is not the case. And while GMU may have been mentioned (by you), the topic of this thread is JMU.

Wow, it was definitely where the UVA backup kids went in the 90s and was considered hard to get into. What happened?

JMU increased the school size way too much. It’s not a STEM school but Virginia economy started moving toward the IT industry.

At the same time, VT became popular and GMU became competitive. Both are STEM schools.

SCHEV's reporting would say that you are wrong. It has the 75th percentile of last year's incoming class at a 4.11; median at 3.89 and bottom 25th of the class at a 3.65.
