JMU increased the school size way too much. It’s not a STEM school but Virginia economy started moving toward the IT industry.

At the same time, VT became popular and GMU became competitive. Both are STEM schools.

You don't even know the stats of OP's kid. There are plenty of students who do not get accepted to JMU. I'm worried about my own this year.

I -quite literally- only know 1 kid who did not get accepted last year. And even that kid's parents weren't surprised. Some kids who did, with their grades and "resume", it was pretty shocking as the narrative that I'd heard was that JMU was being more selective.

That's not to say it's not a great school and a lot of fun. That describes my own non-elite college. But, the odds are in your favor.

JMU used to be WAY more selective. Only a 35% acceptance rate back in the early 1990s...though the school was much smaller as well.

Somehow this narrative continues to survive that it is now more selective, when that is far from the truth.

You're a moron. PEREFECT social media poster. Just make stuff up.

Huh? There is a link several messages up in this thread which showed that JMU's 1988 acceptance rate was only 31%.

Yup.
The landscape has changed but some people haven’t noticed it.

JMU is no more a small liberal arts college.
GMU is no more NOVA 2.0.
VT is no more a cow college that nobody wants to attend.

JMU is still a little harder to get in compared to GMU (but definitely easier than VT non engineering). 30 years ago, GMU was almost an open admission.

3.3-3.4 gets you into JMU from FCPS.

It didn't get my DC in. Maybe stop generalizing?
DP

It's based on the Naviance scattergrams. It's an odd case when someone with a 3.4 from FCPS does not get into JMU. I'm sure that doesn't make you feel better. But, it's statistically true.

It’s also BS. The average GPA according to SCHEV is 3.9

That makes perfect sense. The average GPA would have to be ABOVE the "cut line" on Naviance! You can argue with it all you want, but Naviance shows a dividing line (not literally a line that they create, but one that you can see by looking at the chart) -- the vast, vast majority of those those who apply with a 3.3-3.4 GPA get in.

The average GPA for GMU is quite high too. But, if you have a 3.0-3.1, you are very very very likely getting into GMU. Yes, we know, you know a kid somewhere who had a 3.4 who didn't get it. There are a FEW (very few) exceptions. But, looking at the data -- an applicant with a 3.0-3.1 or higher is going to get into GMU.

you are an idiot. the 75th percentile for GPA last year was a 4.0. the ; 75th percentile was a 3.75 and the bottom 25th percentile was a 3.45. https://research.schev.edu//enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp

DP: Yes, but it's a big enough school where there are a lot of kids still in the 0-25th percentile. You can look at the GPA distribution on the CDS. The acceptance rate is 90%. If you have a 3.0 you have a very strong chance of getting in.

No, you don't. And the bottom 25th percentile is usually reserved for the hooked kids.

It is painful to respond to this stupidity.

If your gpa is 3.0, you are getting into GMU unless there is something really odd happening. I'm not dissing GMU. My hs junior who got a 1440 (98th%) on the PSAT is planning to go there. But facts are facts. A 3.0-3.1 is tbe "cut line" for GMU. There may be a few odd exceptions, but they are not the rule.

Similarly, at JMU, a 3.3-3.4 gets you in (with a few rare exceptions).

DP. What many of us are trying to tell you is that this is not the case. And while GMU may have been mentioned (by you), the topic of this thread is JMU.

SCHEV's reporting would say that you are wrong. It has the 75th percentile of last year's incoming class at a 4.11; median at 3.89 and bottom 25th of the class at a 3.65.

Right - meaning a 3.3/3.4 is well below the 25th %. You just proved what we've telling you, which is that YOU are wrong.

uh, no. a 3.3/3.4 puts you at the bottom of the class. You claimed "a 3.3-3.4 gets you in". a 3.65 is the bottom 25th percentile. Yes, there are some kids lower but you don't want to be applying with a 3.3/3.4. That chunk of the class is usually athletes, legacies, URM, first generation, native american and other hooks.

These threads make me laugh because they always unravel in the same way and have little to do with the OP. Fine, we get it, JMU is less selective than other VA schools. That’s great news for students looking for the college experience it can provide, which includes plenty of high stat kids (mine included).

My friend has 2 DDs there. Both girls had high GPAs, strong test scores, came in as sophomores with their AP credits, and were given generous merit. One already did a short study abroad in Europe and is going again in the spring. They're doing great and loving it, and will graduate with little to no debt. It's a great option.

Ok, I think we're talking past each other because we are in agreement. I wasn't the poster who claimed a 3.3./3.4 would get you in. I bolded my posts.

^^Looks like some posts were already bolded. At any rate, I'm not the poster claiming 3.3./3.4 will get you in.
Anonymous
At my kids' FCPS HS, a 3.4 does get you into JMU in the vast majority of cases.

But if you want to believe that the cutline is higher, go ahead. Limit yourself to not applying. Others with a 3.4 will apply and most will get in.

Our FCPS HS Naviance scattergram plots application results from 2018 to 2023. Useless.
